Position Highlights

The College of Information Science is seeking an enthusiastic professional to join our advising team. This position plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention, driving engagement and empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals. Ideal candidates are individuals who are flexible, adaptable, quick to learn, and excited to work with undergraduate students.

This position serves as the frontline contact for undergraduate students and provides academic advising to support student success, retention and integration into the university. This position guides students in achieving academic and career goals through personalized advising, program approval and credit evaluation. Builds strong relationships to clarify academic requirements and improve the student experience. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies, systems, processes, learning experiences, and networks that support the achievement of desired academic and career outcomes, including the overall student experience

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide advising and academic support for traditional, post-traditional, transfer, and readmitted students across several campuses to ensure successful degree completion including establishing realistic and attainable goals, determining students' stage of development and promoting their growth by finding suitable resources, coordinating academic schedules, support services, evaluation of transfer and military credit for usage toward degree requirements.
  • Assist undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options; assists students with evaluating each option, possible outcomes and implications.
  • Approve and certify programs of study for fulfillment of graduation requirements; approve and verify proposed changes to programs and assist students in their completion; determine if all requirements such as general education, major, grade point average and total units have been met.
  • Support students facing academic challenges by identifying needs, advising them on degree requirements, developing action plans, and connecting them with campus resources.
  • Interpret department, College and University policies, procedures and systems to students.
  • Correspond with prospective students regarding academic programs, admissions and transferability of course work.
  • Align with other University professionals and Student Services staff to stay current with advising best practices, policies, procedures, and regulations to provide best-in-class and consistent student services that proactively address concerns of all students, particularity around academic anxieties, career planning, student engagement and financial planning.
  • Collaborate with community college and military service institution advisors to facilitate the transfer of students.
  • Contribute to the development of web, print and other recruitment materials.
  • Coordinate with faculty and advising leadership on course availability, rotations, and transfer evaluations.
  • Participate in campus-wide advising initiatives (orientation, outreach).
  • Using a variety of University systems, maintains and updates student files, prospect records and advisor notes; ensures accurate and timely documentation of all pertinent records and updates.
  • Collect and report prospective student data and provide evidence and data-based input on admission, advising, recruitment and retention.
  • Identify any potential systematic issues for students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of principles, theories and concepts regarding student advising, student development and career planning principles.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem solving an critical thinking.
  • Proficiency in student information systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups and individuals.
  • Ability to identify needs of students and recommend student resources based on student needs.
  • Ability to build rapport with students.
  • Ability to evaluate academic progress and identify barriers to success.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
