Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide individual academic and career advising to career program students. The Academic/Career Advisor will utilize proactive advising and other student success strategies to develop and maintain a strong support system for program students. This is a part-time, grant-funded position in the Perkins Programs which includes the Coaches & Mentors, CVTE Linkage, and Nontraditional by Gender Programs.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Provide extensive and proactive individual academic advising to a minimum of 65 special population students.
- Communicate regularly with advisees via email, phone and in individual meetings.
- Assist students in planning their programs and in the selection of their courses based on their career objectives, skill assessment results, and degree requirements. Monitor academic progress and other academic/personal factors disclosed by the student.
- Assist and counsel students with educational and career goals including utilization of the MAssHire360 and the other online career information systems.
- Follow up with students and faculty with EAB Navigate alerts.
- Record all advising sessions in EAB.
- Plan two or more workshops per semester on career related and life skills topics.
- Coordinate annual Graduate Survey in cooperation with the Office of Institutional Research.
- Refer students to additional academic support services, such as the O'Neill Center for Disability Services, the Tutoring Center when appropriate.
- Advocate for students, when appropriate, with faculty and other campus offices.
- Assist students by collaborating with a variety of campus resources with College Admissions, Career Services, Transfer, Registration, and Financial Aid offices.
- Assist the Special Program Coordinator with student recruitment and program recruitment intake process.
- Provide support and information to students enrolled in career programs nontraditional to their gender.
- Design publications and marketing material that spread the message of value of gender diversity in the workplace.
- Collaborate with Career Services Office on Semi Annual Career Fairs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in counseling, psychology, education, social work, or closely related field.
- Experience as an academic advisor at an institution of higher learning.
- Knowledge of academic counseling principles, policies, and practices especially as they apply to higher education.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in utilizing retention strategies for student success.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
- Ability to work well with diverse populations.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent technology skills.
- Unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with multicultural students.
- Bilingual.
- Excellent problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate ability to coordinate and conduct workshops on career and life skills.

Additional Information
COMPENSATION: Part-time, MCCC Unit Position; anticipated starting pay rate of $35.31 (Interval 1) for 35 hours per week. Appointment through June 30, 2026 (extended annually pending grant funding for 10-month position). Includes participation in a comprehensive employee benefits program including option for membership in the Massachusetts State Employees' Retirement System.
