Admission Application Reader (Contract Worker)

Washington and Lee University is seeking Application Readers for the 2025-26 undergraduate admission application reading season. The Application Reader is expected to commit to 12-16 hours per week to review first-year applications. Applications are read online.

Washington and Lee University actively promotes a dynamic and welcoming environment that allows students and employees of multiple backgrounds and perspectives to learn, work, and thrive together. Successful candidates will contribute to that environment and exhibit potential for excellence in their areas of expertise.

Application Readers Agree to Provide:

  • 12-16 hours per week of application reading between mid-November 2025 and early March 2026
  • Attendance at mandatory reader training on October 29 and 30, 2025
  • A computer and access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection in a private, secure location
  • A dual-screen setup for reading efficiency
  • Any necessary office supplies

Reader Training: The W&L admissions office will host a two-day training session on Wednesday, October 29, and Thursday, October 30, to review application reading objectives, class priorities, and system training. Travel and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed for on-campus attendance. Zoom attendance will be available.

Pay: $30.00 per hour, to be invoiced monthly according to services provided

Essential Functions:

  • Application Readers play a critical role in helping the undergraduate admission staff review a large and diverse applicant pool with care, optimism, and integrity.
  • In keeping with a whole-person evaluation philosophy, readers will be responsible for reviewing high school transcripts, personal essays, recommendation letters, and other application materials—considering them in the context of each student's life experiences and background—and submitting thorough and detailed evaluation notes.
  • Attend the October 29-30 training and complete required preparation meetings and modules.
  • Maintain communication with the Admissions Office to ensure evaluation notes and processes meet established expectations.
  • Participate in regular virtual reader meetings. Application Readers will work closely with full-time admissions staff as they review applications.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • Must have experience in a relevant field such as college admissions, college counseling, community-based organizations, or higher education marketing/communications. Direct experience in selective college admissions is highly desirable.
  • Must demonstrate strong computer skills and the ability to quickly adapt to new technologies.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and read thoroughly under time constraints.
  • Must possess strong analytical skills and concise, clear writing ability.

Application Instructions: Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Applications will be accepted through October 13, 2025. A resume and cover letter are required. Upload both required documents to the Resume/CV upload section of the application. You will be asked to provide names and contact information for three professional references.
