Aeronautics (Airframe and Powerplant) Instructor - Full-time Faculty
DESCRIPTION
This position is a full-time tenure track, 10-month classroom teaching assignment in the Aerospace, Industrial Arts, and Applied Technologies division. The current teaching load is 15 lecture hour equivalents per semester. Faculty are also responsible for 5 office hours per week and are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development and campus committees is expected. The teaching assignment may include courses offered in either onsite, online and/or hybrid format, evening and/or weekend classes.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Teach fifteen lecture hour equivalents per semester in Aeronautics (Airframe & Powerplant) using various teaching methods including demonstrations and active learning strategies.
- Maintain five office hours per week, including regular posted office hours, which are accessible to students.
- Responsible for preparation time.
- Participate in faculty/division meetings; yearly program review; curricular planning, development, and implementation; student learning outcomes: data collection and writing action plans, program learning outcomes, development, assessment, and implementation; evaluation of educational programs; and college governance to advance the college's mission and strategic goals.
- Participate in faculty professional development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.
- Maintain records of attendance, census, grades, etc.
- Provide an environment conducive to effective learning.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
- Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Travel between District locations is also expected.
- Performs other instructional-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications for Faculty in California Community Colleges: (Applicant must meet one of the following requirements)
Any Bachelor's degree or higher AND two years professional experience, OR any Associate's degree AND six years of professional experience. (Academic Affairs Division, California Community Colleges)
A current FAA Airframe & Powerplant license is required to teach those courses that are part of an FAA approved aircraft maintenance school. (CFR Title 14: Aeronautics and Space PART 147 – Aviation Maintenance Technical Schools Subpart B – Instructor Certification Requirement § 147.23)
Antelope Valley College Equivalency: (Approved: November 6, 2025)
Area: Airframe & Powerplant
College work, military training, or nationally recognized certifications equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree and two years of related occupational experience in the discipline;
OR college work, military training, or nationally recognized certifications equivalent to an Associate's degree plus six years of occupational experience related to the discipline,
OR Eight years of experience in the aeronautics occupation, two years of which must have included assignment as a supervisor, instructor, trainer, or owner of an aircraft maintenance facility.
NOTE: A current FAA Airframe & Power plant license is required.
AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (tit. 5 § 53024.1).
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in academic subject area related to the assignment.
- Three years full time, postsecondary teaching experience in Career Technical Education (preferably at a community college) OR 10 years of recent experience in training programs as related to the aviation/aerospace manufacturing/maintenance industries.
- Industry certifications related to the assignment (e.g., but not limited to FAA Inspector Authorization, Avionics, Borescope certifications, GE, Lycoming, Pratt & Whitney).
- Evidence of successful grant writing or scholarship awards.
- Demonstrates strong applied aerospace industry knowledge and maintains current certifications, training, and professional relevance.
- Communicates complex technical concepts clearly and effectively using multiple instructional methods that support diverse learners.
- Exhibits professionalism, dependability, and collegiality while working collaboratively with faculty, staff, industry partners, and students.
- Engages in continuous improvement through participation in governance, curriculum development, program review, and faculty development activities.
- Shows initiative, adaptability, and problem-solving skills in support of program needs, instructional delivery modes (onsite, hybrid, or online), and evolving workforce expectations.
