Description:
Hofstra University is seeking a self-motivated camp professional for the Assistant/Associate Director of Summer Camps and Youth Education, who demonstrates a love of summer camp and all it has to offer. Reporting to the Director of Summer Camps and Youth Education, the Assistant/Associate Director will assist in the overall management of Hofstra University's summer camp programs which serve over 5,000 youth from Long Island and the surrounding areas through day-to-day administrative operations of camp, supervising staff, coordinating camp schedules, and assisting with administrative work. The ideal candidate is a flexible team player with a passion for working with children, and prior experience working at a summer camp. This position requires extended hours, including some weekends.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Directly supervises seasonal Operations and Attendance Office teams (approximately six) which includes providing daily guidance, support and evaluating them throughout the summer.
- Oversees the inventory and control of general camp equipment and supplies; partners with Program Leads to ensure they have supplies to execute programming throughout the summer.
- Oversees the New York State Department of Health permitting process by collecting required documentation and organizing safety plans.
- Coordinates operations and administrative elements of the summer camp experience including space utilization, meals, budget and contract administration, vendor relations, and partnerships will campus offices.
- Creates weekly operation plans to allow for set up and breakdown of spaces throughout the summer.
- Creates operations plans throughout the off-season for events including Reunions, Open Houses, and virtual events.
- Oversees logistics for daily camper arrivals and departures, collaborating with the bus company and attendance office.
- Enforces the policies, traditions, and rules of camp and communicates with families as needed.
- Supports the recruitment, hiring and onboarding of 400 seasonal employees; Assists with communication between Human Resources, coaches, and program directors, and assists with the development and implementation of staff orientation and training.
- Participates in summer activities and events which may include jumping, playing, and stopping to talk with small children to promote community partnerships.
- Promotes community partnerships by attending various off-season events such as sporting events, festivals, and conferences.
- Performs other related duties as needed and assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- At least 5 years related work experience in a day or residential camp setting with experience working in a supervisory role.
- Must have a valid Driver's license.
- Understanding of the developmental needs of children in a camp environment.
- Ability to regularly lift and/or move 25 pounds of equipment and supplies and work full days outdoors in the summer.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to problem-solve in a fast-paced, interactive environment.
- Ability to participate in camp activities that may include jumping, playing, and stopping to talk with small children.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a team leader and member.
- Available for all consecutive days during the entire duration of the summer program
- Ability to work extended hours including some weekends, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience planning medium to large scale events preferred.
- Experience as a camper in a day or residential camp.
