Position title: Orthopaedic Surgery Translational Research Faculty
Salary range: The posted UC Salary scales set the minimum pay at the appointment as determined by appointment type and, if applicable, rank and/or step. The base pay range for this position is Assistant Professor: $118,000 - $153,000; Associate or Full: $145,500 -$245,900. Salary is negotiated annually. Position description
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery within the School of Medicine at the University of California San Diego is committed to academic excellence within the faculty, staff, and student body. We are seeking research scientists or clinician-scientists with a cutting-edge translational research program focused on musculoskeletal physiology and disease.
Responsibilities include leading a successful research program, contributing to the education, teaching, and mentorship of UCSD undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, as well as residents, and providing service to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The successful candidates will develop and lead an innovative, independently funded research program focused on structure-function relationships in musculoskeletal systems, integrating basic science and clinical investigation within a strong translational framework. The successful candidates will also articulate and implement a clear strategic vision to sustain, grow, and advance their research program over time.
Appointment will be tenured or tenure-track. The appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate's background and experience. Series will include 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence with secured extramural funding.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates must have an MD, DO, or equivalent, MD/PhD, or a PhD in Bioengineering, Physiology, Biology, or a related orthopaedics field.
Candidates with an MD, DO, or equivalent, who will have clinical duties, must be board-certified or board-eligible in their related field and must also have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.
Associate/Full Professor
- Candidates must have a track record of 2+ years of experience leading a clinical, translational, and/or basic research program, including an independent, extramurally funded research program (e.g., NIH R01 or equivalent).
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Assistant Professor
- Candidates must have completed at least two years of postdoctoral training by the time of the start of the appointment.
Preferred qualifications
Assistant Professor
- Candidates with a track record of 2+ years of experience leading a clinical, translational, and/or basic research program, including an independent, extramurally funded research program (e.g., NIH R01 or equivalent) are preferred.
Associate/Full Professor
- Candidates with 5+ years of experience leading a clinical, translational, and/or basic research program are preferred.
- Candidates with an independent extramurally-funded research program (e.g., NIH R01 or equivalent), 5+ years of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, and 2+ funded grants, are preferred.
