The Department of Clinical and Health Information Sciences

The Department of Clinical and Health Information Sciences (CHIS) is one of the academic units in the College of Allied Health Sciences. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Medical Laboratory Science, Respiratory Therapy, and Advanced Medical Imaging Technology. The department also has four graduate programs in Medical Laboratory Science Leadership, Respiratory Therapy, Health Informatics and the Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Science.

Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati’s Medical Laboratory Science Graduate Programs are searching for a full-time Educator Track faculty member who will contribute to the department’s teaching, service and scholarship. This role encompasses teaching responsibilities across both Master's and Doctoral Medical Laboratory Science programs, with a primary emphasis on advanced doctoral-level coursework. This is a 12-month position with rank commensurate with education and experience.

Medical Laboratory Science Programs

The UC MS-MLSL (Master of Medical Laboratory Science Leadership) program offers a two-year program designed primarily for working adults using an asynchronous distance learning approach. The program enrolled its first students in the spring of 2021. The curriculum focuses on a leadership core along with concentrations in health administration and management, higher education, molecular diagnostics and immunohematology. A portion of the MS-MLSL curriculum forms the foundation for the DCLS curriculum; providing a bridge for career and academic advancement.

The UC DCLS (Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Science) program offers a three-year, plus one semester program designed for working adults using asynchronous distance learning courses with a clinical residency requirement and culminating experience. The highly competitive DCLS program enrolled the first cohort of students in the fall of 2025. The mission of the DCLS program is to provide broad-based knowledge and skills to prepare students for advanced careers in clinical laboratory sciences, such as consulting with physicians and diagnostic management teams to improve test selection, utilization, and result interpretation, patient and healthcare provider education on laboratory related issues, performing evidence-based research to support changes in the role of the laboratory in patient care, improve patient safety, and reduce costs. The program has NAACLS program candidate status, which is considered pre-accreditation.

Essential Functions

This position is primarily responsible for teaching and service in the DCLS program, the Clinical and Health Information Sciences Department and College of Allied Health Sciences with the possibility of teaching roles in the MS-MLSL program. Teaching and service responsibilities include, but are not limited to, course development and curriculum assessment; primary instruction of didactic courses using online delivery modalities; leadership with and mentoring of adjunct faculty; student advising and mentoring, including culminating experiences service on program committees; and tasks as assigned. While online teaching and service are central to this position, scholarship activities are also required consistent with the mission of the program and the University.

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Laboratory Science or other related discipline (microbiology, biomedical health sciences, immunology, virology, biochemistry, education etc.) or professional Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science.
  • Candidates currently enrolled in a terminal degree program are welcome to apply, but the doctorate must be completed prior to the start date.
  • A minimum of two years on-line distance learning teaching experience
  • Three years of experience within the field of medical laboratory science in a leadership role
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and assessment
  • Current knowledge and skill in the use of computer technology and educational learning
  • Nationally certified as a medical laboratory scientist generalist (ASCP, AMT or equivalent)

Additional Qualifications

  • Five-years of experience within medical laboratory science clinical practice
  • Prior scholarly works published or presented
  • Active in professional activities at local, state, and/or national levels
  • Demonstrated student mentorship experience and commitment to student success
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Interest and ability to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to present complex material to students unfamiliar with a subject.
  • Accreditation experience
