About the Department

The Department of Physical Therapy is a nationally respected center of excellence. Guided by our mission “to prepare doctors of physical therapy who are committed to clinical excellence, professional distinction, and the pursuit of scholarly activities,” we provide a rigorous, research-driven educational environment. Our Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program is ranked #1 among public universities in Georgia and is the oldest physical therapy program in the state, established in 1968.

Each year, the department enrolls three cohorts of 44 students, reflecting a wide range of academic interests and life experiences. With a dedicated faculty of 10 full-time (three tenured) and two part-time members, we provide students with deep engagement in research and discovery. Our students regularly present at regional, state, and national conferences, and the program proudly maintains a 100% graduation rate and a 100% licensure pass rate for the past eight years. Our four research laboratories—jointly led by four principal investigators—have benefited from $100,000 in endowment support over the past seven years and maintain a strong portfolio of extramural federal funding. Complementing the DPT program, we offer both a DPT/Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences and a Ph.D. in Health Sciences with a concentration in Translational Rehabilitation Sciences, expanding opportunities for advanced research training.
