Position Summary:

The assistant track & field coach reports to the director of track & field and provides coaching expertise, leadership, management and administration for all aspects of a competitive NCAA program, resulting in a positive and beneficial intercollegiate experience for student-athletes. The successful candidate will place the highest priority on academic integrity and a commitment to student-athlete success.

Essential Responsibilities and Position Accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership, organization and supervision for all practices and varsity contests in conjunction with the head coach.
  • Organize and implement a successful recruiting program that attracts academically and athletically gifted prospects—with an unwavering commitment to retention, degree completion and academic success.
  • Conduct all aspects of the program within the rules, regulations and procedures of the NCAA, conference, athletic department policy manual and the university.
  • Foster an atmosphere of sportsmanship, professionalism and respect among athletic staff, coaches and student-athletes.
  • Prioritize student-athlete safety and welfare in all aspects of the track & field programs.
  • Manage team needs within the parameters of the annual budget; review all budget requests and projected fiscal needs.
  • Schedule all team travel, practices and contests in accordance with university policies, conference guidelines and NCAA bylaws (under the direction of the head coach).
  • Review student-athlete eligibility requirements to ensure full compliance with governing rules and regulations.
  • Maintain positive and constructive relationships with university staff (Admission, Academic Affairs, Advancement, Student Affairs, etc.) and departmental staff to ensure an efficient and effective program.
  • Build and maintain relationships with parents, alumni, program supporters and others to promote a positive image of the athletic department.
  • Attend and participate in athletic department meetings and rules education sessions.

Qualifications:
Comprehensive understanding of multiple facets of NCAA athletics is required. A bachelor’s degree is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong interpersonal communication skills (written and oral) are essential. The ideal candidate will possess excellent leadership and mentoring abilities and thrive in a flexible, fast-paced team environment with a positive attitude and sense of humor.

An unwavering commitment to academic integrity, gender equity, student-athlete welfare and knowledge of NCAA and Title IX compliance is essential.

Required certifications, licenses and clearances:

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • NCAA compliance background check
  • Successful completion of annual NCAA coaches exam
  • Certification in first aid, CPR and AED

This position requires travel and variable working hours, including evenings and weekends.
