Job Description:

Position Summary

The Assistant Dean partners with students, faculty, and staff to advance student success across undergraduate and graduate programs. Core responsibilities include academic advising and registration oversight, transfer-credit and independent-study approvals, coordination of course schedules and experiential-learning requirements, graduate program support, and policy implementation. The role oversees data tracking and reporting on academic standing and retention, serves on academic committees, and supports international students and graduate student initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Student advising & success (primary)
    • Provide academic advising to undergraduate students to improve retention, timely progress to degree, and career readiness.
    • Monitor academic standing and intervene proactively (probation/alert outreach) in coordination with the Student Academic Success & Engagement (SASE) office; contact students who are unregistered or enrolled in fewer than full-time credits after each registration cycle.
    • Approve Academic Record Change forms for Business Concentration majors and process independent-study requests.
    • Review and approve transfer-credit petitions and ensure transfer articulation is accurate and equitable.
    • Respond to student and parent inquiries while ensuring FERPA compliance.
  2. Curriculum, scheduling & program coordination
    • Coordinate with the Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chairs, Program Directors, and the Registrar to develop efficient semester course schedules and ensure degree requirements are accurately represented in advising resources.
    • Allocate faculty advisors to students.
    • Enroll students in graduate classes and help manage graduate course sequencing.
  3. Experiential learning & accreditation support
    • Oversee implementation and tracking of School of Business experiential-learning requirements for undergraduate students;
    • Ensure documentation for AACSB/other accreditation needs.
    • Collaborate on institutional policy review to improve clarity, relevance, and equitable application.
  4. Data, reporting & process improvement
    • Produce regular reports on academic standing, transfer credits, and other core metrics
    • Analyze and interpret complex data to inform decisions.
    • Maintain and improve processes (registration outreach, transfer review, independent-study workflow) to increase operational efficiency and student outcomes.
  5. Graduate program & student governance support
    • Coordinate with graduate program directors and the Office of Graduate Programs to manage schedules and support graduate student advising
    • Engage with the Graduate Student Council.
    • Serve as a point of contact for graduate student issues and program logistics.
  6. Student welfare, compliance & special populations
    • Work closely with the Dean of Students on academic, disciplinary, or health/emotional issues requiring cross-office coordination.
  7. Governance & committee service
    • Serve on School and college committees as assigned by the Dean
    • Partner with other Assistant Deans and campus colleagues to support students changing schools/majors.
  8. Other duties

    Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean to support the School’s mission and goals.

Annual Salary: $65,360.00

The hiring salary above represents the University's good faith estimate at the time of posting in compliance with the Albany County Salary Transparency Law.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s degree in business, higher-education administration, or related field preferred; exceptional candidates with a bachelor’s degree plus relevant experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic advising, academic administration, or related higher-education operations.
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills; attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets and produce actionable reports.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency with database systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel required), and data-visualization tools.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a business school or higher-education environment.
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Familiarity with student information systems and degree-audit tools (examples: Banner, degree-audit platforms) and with basic data-visualization platforms.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of higher-education accreditation standards (AACSB, Middle States) and quality assurance practices.
  • Analytical thinking and problem solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills; service orientation and cultural competence.

Employment type: Full-time, administrative/professional staff.
