PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Office of Assessment and Institutional Research advances Scripps College's mission and strategic plan by fostering a campus culture of evidence-based planning and decision-making to enhance the experience and support the success of all Scripps' stakeholders. One key role of A&IR at Scripps College is that of a data steward and our three major responsibilities include assessment & evaluation, external reporting, and accreditation. Our priority is meaningful data. We define this as data that provides insight and facilitates pathways to advance student success and enhance the entire Scripps community.

Reporting to the Director of Assessment and Institutional Research, the Assistant Director will work collaboratively as a member of the A&IR team to facilitate overall assessment and evaluation, data collection, processing, and reporting, and institutional accreditation. Emphasis will be placed on facilitating and supporting curricular assessment at the institutional and departmental levels to help provide valuable and actionable insight focused on student learning outcomes.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • In consultation with faculty stakeholders, facilitate and support curricular assessment and evaluation activities, data collection, data processing, and data reporting.
  • Support course evaluation activities and processes as needed.
  • Design and implement co-curricular assessment and evaluation frameworks, advising senior leadership on findings that impact institutional strategy.
  • Conduct literature reviews to provide context for and inform data reports.
  • Conduct environmental scans on high-interest topics.
  • Contribute to resource libraries to assist with assessment and evaluation efforts.
  • Coordinate development of executive summaries and reports on various assessment and evaluation studies.
  • Advance use of current and best-practice research designs and methodological approaches.
  • Determine methodologies for tracking and visualizing Scripps' key performance indicators, and present actionable recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Support student survey administration, data collection, processing, and reporting.
  • Data check internally and externally reported data for accuracy.
  • Support census data file extraction and cleaning processes.
  • Construct, process, and analyze various data files.
  • Develop easily digestible formats to communicate both quantitative and qualitative research findings to both internal and external constituencies.
  • Develop executive-level reports and data-driven recommendations that inform institutional policy, accreditation compliance strategies, and resource allocation decisions.
  • Recommend institutional readiness strategies for accreditation reaffirmation, including designing data collection plans, advising leadership on compliance risks, and coordinate logistics for visits.
  • Provide support and feedback for accreditation-related data projects and report drafts as needed.
  • Supervision of student employee(s) and Research Associate I and II(s).
  • File, label, and archive electronic and hard copy data files.
  • Coordinate with team to develop, review, and implement office policies.
  • Serve as a reciprocal sounding board and brainstorm partner for team-members.
  • Represent the office in collaboration with the Director in campus-wide initiatives, partnering with senior leadership and faculty to advance strategic goals.
  • Manage operations of the office when the Director is absent or unavailable.
  • Practice FERPA Guidelines and office data stewardship ethics at all times when working with data and information that passes through or is housed in our office.
  • Collaborate with and advise senior administrators, faculty committees, and cross-functional teams on institutional priorities, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards and strategic objectives across the College and the Claremont Colleges.
  • Actively support the College's Principles of Community in the performance of job duties.
  • Research and promote ways to make data collection and communication efforts streamlined, refined, and more efficient.
  • Respond to ad hoc requests as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated advanced experience using statistical software such as SPSS.
  • Experience using data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Familiarity with relational databases.
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., SQL, Python).
  • Experience in using survey software (e.g., Qualtrics).
  • Familiarity with qualitative data analysis.
  • Ability to report data in a meaningful and digestible format.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to multi-task and set priorities.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and being flexible to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work both independently, with minimal supervision, and as part of a cohesive team.
  • High attention to detail.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Master's degree required in the social sciences, statistics or in a related field, or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities of the position. Two or more years of experience in an assessment and/or institutional research office is preferred.

LICENSES / CERTIFICATES: None.

HOURS, CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: This is a regular status, full-time, benefits eligible, exempt position. The regular hours of the position are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Salary rate range: $70,720-$83,000 annualized. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: May supervise student employees.

Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs, for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.
