Assistant Director of the James Reserve
Under the general direction of the Reserve Director, assists with daily operational aspects of the Reserve Sites; James San Jacinto Mountains Reserve and Oasis de los Osos, including administration and user management, building and vehicle maintenance, facilities and information systems, database management, museum collections, public outreach activities, and research and educational programs. This job requires generally 50% working outdoors and may change depending on the needs of the Reserve.
The full salary range is $60,301.44 - $97,008.48 annually. The expected pay scale is $60,301.44 - $82,747.44 annually. We base salary offers on education, licensure, certifications, experience, and other business needs.
Requirements:
- Graduation with BS degree in biology, botany, zoology, geography or comparable field and one year experience, or equivalent combination. Preferred: M.S. degree in a comparable field.
- Computer experience with word processors, spreadsheets, databases, and office applications.
- Experience operating heavy equipment like snow plows, chain saws, and tractors.
- Basic understanding of trail construction and maintenance.
- Required: Valid driver's license and enrollment in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
- Special conditions: Overtime, travel, and working outdoors in inclement weather.
- Minimum requirements: Basic understanding of state and federal agencies and regulatory policies; ability to learn names of plants, animals, and natural history; knowledge of museum data collections; ability to work independently; skills in interpersonal communication and oral presentation; capacity to operate heavy equipment.
- Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated abilities in writing for science and general subjects; general knowledge of alternative technologies like solar power.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilities and Grounds Management (40%): Monitor and maintain safe facilities, including buildings, grounds, and access roads. Maintain instrumentation like weather stations and solar systems. Patrol and mend fences, roads, and trails. Upkeep of plumbing and septic systems, and facilities inventory.
- Reserve Support and Management (25%): Assist with visitors for research, teaching, and outreach. Manage administrative duties, public relations, and visitor paperwork. Support researchers with equipment and supplies.
- Database and Other Information Management (20%): Maintain databases for museum collections and environmental monitoring. Update websites and social media. Manage species lists, phenology records, and habitat restoration programs.
- Research and Education Support (15%): Assist in organizing workshops and conferences. Develop displays and publications. Participate in public outreach, guided tours, and collaborations with agencies.
