Assistant Director of the Rockowitz Writing Center (Academic Resource Center Specialist)

The Dr. Murray and Anne C. Rockowitz Writing Center (RWC) is a comprehensive peer tutoring program that provides assistance in critical reading and writing to all students enrolled at Hunter College. The Assistant Director of the RWC will support the tutoring programs already in place and will work collaboratively with the Director to develop new programs and initiatives that will advance the mission of the RWC to support the diverse student body of the college. The Assistant Director will, therefore, bring experience teaching and supporting a multilingual and multicultural student population, as well as knowledge of current research and best practices for writing tutoring.
Along with the CUNY Title Overview, the assistant director will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Work with the Director to develop short-term and long-term goals for the Writing Center as well as other policy-setting activities and monitor progress towards them.
- Oversee all operations of the Writing Center in the absence of the Director
- Keep abreast of current research and best-practices in Writing Center Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Across the Curriculum, and/or English Education in order to help develop research-based programs to support student needs.
- Work with the Director to assess programs and resources and conduct observations and performance reviews of tutors and support staff as appropriate.
- Develop and implement strategies to increase student participation in, and engagement with, the Writing Center, including managing the Writing Center’s website and social media accounts.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and mentor writing tutors and support staff in close collaboration with other members of the administrative staff.
- Onboard and orient new tutors and support staff, prepare all hiring paperwork, and communicate with the Office of Human Resources, the Office of Financial Aid, and the International Student Office about student-employees when necessary.
- Manage the non-personnel budget, and procure software, pedagogical materials, and office supplies in accordance with CUNY and NYS procedures for purchasing
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in English, English Education, Writing Studies, or Rhetoric and Composition.
- Leadership experience in a college Writing Center, Learning Center, or other academic support unit
- Experience teaching writing at the college level
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, a strong customer service orientation,and attention to detail
CUNY Title Overview
Administers the activities of a learning resource or support center.
- Supports the design and delivery of academic resources such as tutoring, remedial and other student programs and services, delivered in a variety of modes, including on-line
- Produces and administers training programs, lectures, workshops, seminars and special events
- Collaborates with various College offices to improve student and faculty services; implements new services and assures existing services are effectively provided.
- Serves as resource expert for students and faculty regarding center policies and procedures, and if needed, technology issues related to their learning experience
- May assist and/or supervise office operations and/or department budget
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary commensurate with education and experience, $82,928- $86,645.

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
