Job Summary

The Digital Media Team is responsible for translating faculty expertise and course learning objectives into high-quality media content for asynchronous delivery. This role shares responsibility for the pre-production, principal photography, and post-production phases of video production related to assigned projects. Works closely with faculty members to facilitate a final, edited deliverable that adheres to branding and accessibility standards.

Assistant Digital Media Producer: Contributes to the hands-on media production work related to online course design and development. Under the guidance of a Senior Digital Media Producer, this role partners with Gies faculty, Learning Designers, and Graphics & Motion Designers to produce instructional video content for Gies College of Business's online educational portfolio.

Associate Digital Media Producer: Leads and contributes to the media production work related to online course design and development. Independently or under the guidance of a Senior Digital Media Producer, this role partners with Gies faculty, Learning Designers, and Graphics & Motion Designers to produce instructional video content for Gies College of Business's online educational portfolio. Onboards and trains hourly employees and contributes toward team-wide continuous improvement initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assistant Digital Media Producer

Instructional Media Design

  • Coordinate instructional media design projects from inception to completion and maintain a large volume of media files and project tracking documents.
  • Collaborate with faculty and Digital Media team members on storyboards, scripts, PowerPoint slides/Edit Decision Lists (multi-column scripts), and planning documents to facilitate effective integration of online learning content
  • Offer video-driven creative design suggestions that are part of the collaborative development of the course's curriculum plan and syllabus.

Instructional Media Development

  • Serve as co-producer on standard Teaching & Learning development projects, including new course development, course redesign, and curation of existing content.
  • Complete post-production editing: Compiling raw footage and visuals into polished video drafts, and incorporate feedback from faculty, Learning Designers, and Quality Control staff to refine drafts into final video deliverables. Provide faculty with basic consultation and support around faculty-generated content such as home studio setups, simple field recordings, and basic video editing software.

Communication

  • Follow course production schedules and deadlines set by development sub-unit and/or other members of leadership. Provide regular progress updates to direct supervisor; alert direct supervisor, Project Manager, and relevant sub-unit members of any anticipated or realized delays in production.
  • Attend and contribute to standing team and project status meetings

Associate Digital Media Producer

Instructional Media Design

  • Collaborate with faculty and Digital Media team members on storyboards, scripts, PowerPoint slides/Edit Decision Lists (multi-column scripts), and planning documents to facilitate effective integration of online learning content
  • Offer video-driven creative design suggestions that are part of the collaborative development of the course's curriculum plan and syllabus

Instructional Media Development

  • Serve as lead producer or co-producer on standard or moderately complex Teaching & Learning development projects, including new course development, course redesign, and curation of existing content.
  • Complete post-production editing: Compiling raw footage and visuals into polished video drafts, and incorporate feedback from faculty, Learning Designers, and Quality Control staff to refine drafts into final video deliverables.
  • Provide faculty with comprehensive consultation and support around faculty-generated content such as home studio setups, simple field recordings, self-service studio training, and basic through intermediate video editing software

Training & Documentation

  • Onboard and train new hourly Digital Media staff
  • Assist and provide feedback on the development and maintenance of internal and external process documentation
  • Develop and maintain documentation related to faculty self-recording and self-publishing of media content.

Communication

  • Follow course production schedules and deadlines set by development sub-unit and/or other members of leadership. Provide regular progress updates to direct supervisor; alert direct supervisor, Project Manager, and relevant sub-unit members of any anticipated or realized delays in production
  • Attend and contribute to standing team and project status meetings

Additional Physical Demands- Assistant and Associate

Position involves frequently moving and placing boxes that weigh more than 50 lbs. Field recordings and occasional live events may require the ability to stand and move around for extended periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications - Assistant and Associate

  • Bachelor's degree in film/video production, cinematography, radio and television, documentary film production, photojournalism, communications, graphic design, or a closely related field to the position.
  • NOTE: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

Minimum Qualifications - Assistant also requires:

  • One (1) year (12 months) of experience in areas including non-linear video editing, motion graphics, video lighting and composition, camera operation, graphics design, audio recording, video production, or a closely related professional area.
  • Demonstrated experience with non-linear video editing software
  • Demonstrated experience with video recording hardware and workflows, including camera setup and audio recording

Minimum Qualifications - Associate also requires:

  • Two (2) years (24 months) of professional work experience in areas including non-linear video editing, motion graphics, video lighting and composition, camera operation, graphics design, audio recording, video production, or a closely related professional area.
  • Demonstrated experience developing video lectures/courses in a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated experience with non-linear video editing software
  • Demonstrated experience with video recording hardware and workflows, including camera setup, lighting placement, and audio recording
  • Demonstrated experience still and motion graphics manipulation, including PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications - Assistant and Associate

  • Master's degree in media production or a related field
  • Solid understanding of safety practices related to setting up cameras, lights, and other video production gear. Experience switching live production broadcasts.
  • Experience recording, broadcasting, and editing green screen chroma key footage.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty members in a higher education environment for the development of online course video lectures.
  • Experience working within Title II Accessibility Standards and strict branding requirements.

Preferred Qualifications - Associate only

  • Extensive cross-collaboration experience across multiple teams handling different aspects of course development and production.
  • Adobe Certified Professional in Digital Video Using Adobe Premiere Pro

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Assistant and Associate

  • Familiarity with video review platforms such as Frame.io
  • Familiarity with video switching and recording hardware/software such as Vmix and BlackMagic
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a larger media team.
  • Familiarity with Media Asset Management on a network-based server
  • Familiarity with Sony & BlackMagic cameras

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Assistant only

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Associate only

  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder
  • Keeping track of deadlines and production details with project management tools such as Asana

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5014 - Cinematographer/Creative Video Producer position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after search close date. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary for the Assistant Digital Media Producer position is $54,000 to $56,000 and for the Associate Digital Media Producer is $58,000 to $60,000.

The position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship.

Hybrid work options may be available for this position; however, must be available to be onsite at the University of Illinois Urbana-Campaign campus based on operational needs.
