Assistant or Associate Professor of Special Education
The Department of Teaching and Learning, in the School of Education and Human development, in the College of Arts, Sciences & Education at Florida International University invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Special Education. This is a 9-month tenure-track position beginning Fall 2026.
The area of focus within Special Education is open; however, there is a preference for candidates with experience and research focusing on instructional and behavioral strategies for students with high-incidence disabilities, students from high need districts and communities, educator preparation within Special Education and related fields, or technology within Special Education. The selected candidate will be expected to have an active research agenda and conduct scholarly activities such as research in a particular field of knowledge, seek external funding, and submit for publication and presentation at professional conferences; advise doctoral students; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; participate in program leadership and department and university committees; and develop and maintain collaborative and professional partnerships with local schools and districts.
Primary Responsibilities
- Publish in respected refereed scholarly journals
- Pursue external funding
- Present at academic and practitioner-based conferences
- Advise and mentor graduate students, including service on dissertation committees, research, teaching, and community-engaged scholarship
- Teach (face-to-face, hybrid, and/or asynchronously online) courses at the undergraduate, Master’s, and Ph.D. levels
- Provide service to the program, department, college, university, community, and profession
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD./Ed.D. in Special Education, or closely related field at time of appointment
- Expertise in Special Education
- Record of scholarly activity commensurate with expectations for Assistant or Associate Professor, including publications in academic journals and procurement of external funding
- Record of excellence in teaching and/or mentoring students in higher education contexts
- Experience as a PreK-12 Special Education teacher in a school setting
- Evidence of collaboration with faculty, students, and other stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- Evidence of successful applications for external funding commensurate with expectations for Assistant or Associate Professor
- Successful record of mentoring doctoral students as dissertation chair
- Experience designing and implementing new courses
- 3+ years of teaching experience in PreK-12 classrooms in special education, particularly in high need districts and communities
- Expertise in instructional and behavioral strategies for students with high-incidence disabilities, students from high need districts and communities, educator preparation within special education and related fields, or technology within special education
- Experience teaching in multiple modalities (i.e., face-to-face, hybrid, asynchronously online)
- Knowledge of special education law and policy related to PreK-12 students with disabilities in the United States
