Position Description

About the Psychology Department

The mission of the Spelman College Department of Psychology is to prepare students for the service and study of Psychology. We seek to empower women to lead and effect positive change in the world by instructing our students in the ethical, systematic study of behavior and mental processes, and in the application of Psychology to community and global issues, with the expectation of intellectual engagement and academic excellence. The Department has 17 full-time faculty members (10 tenured). Collectively, the Psychology Department faculty have expertise in approximately eight Psychology subfields, ranging from Clinical Psychology to Quantitative Psychology.

The Department of Psychology at Spelman College is seeking to fill a position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 2026. Faculty should be teacher-scholars who are dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. All candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in liberal arts and sciences education, be able to contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, advising, and mentoring, assist in curriculum development and assessment, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment. The successful candidate should have demonstrated scholarly productivity with the potential to secure external funding and to engage undergraduates in their scholarship, research, or creative pursuits.

We are seeking someone with a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology, Human Development, or related fields with a strong background in Quantitative Methodology (mixed-methodology included). The ideal candidate will be expected to teach developmental courses (e.g., developmental psychology, child psychology) and statistics-based courses (e.g. Statistics I, Statistics II, Psychometrics), foundational courses (e.g., Introduction to Psychological Sciences), and other courses in the candidate's area of expertise. The ideal candidate will have scholarly interests that contribute to lifespan developmental research. We particularly welcome scholars whose research integrates an intersectional lens, considering how factors such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status, among other identities, shape developmental trajectories and outcomes.
