The Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the broad area of Biophotonics and Mechanobiology. This position is highly multidisciplinary, and the ideal candidate will significantly expand the University of Houston’s research in biomedical imaging and optics, mechanobiology, and artificial intelligence.

Qualifications: The applicant must have an earned Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or a related field with expertise in the broad area of Biophotonics, Mechanobiology, and Artificial Intelligence. The ideal candidate should have notable experience in biomedical optics imaging techniques, such as optical coherence tomography and its functional extensions, such as optical coherence elastography and optical coherence tomography angiography. The ideal candidate should also be well-versed and experienced in cellular or tissue biomechanics, designing, building, and programming multimodal optical imaging systems. The ideal candidate will also have experience in artificial intelligence for tissue health classification and integrating data from multimodal imaging. The candidate should also have a strong publication record, teaching experience, and a strong mentorship record. The candidate should also have excellent interpersonal skills, a strong record of technical presentations, and be ready to initiate new collaborations with internal and external faculty. The ideal candidate will also have significant experience with internal and external funding applications.

The appointment is anticipated at the assistant professor level. The successful applicant will contribute to teaching, research, and service activities within the Department, College, and University, and be a part of a team of faculty members and research scientists that secures externally funded research grants and supports pedagogy within the multi-disciplinary graduate research programs in the Cullen College of Engineering.

The BME department currently has 21 tenured or tenure-track faculty members with over 300 undergraduates and over 100 graduate students. The Cullen College of Engineering is ranked #44 in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report list of top public engineering programs across the nation. Houston is the fourth-largest city in the U.S., with a population of over 6.8 million in the greater Houston area. It is the “energy capital of the world” and houses the largest medical center in the world. The greater Houston area offers state-of-the-art recreational facilities, world-class arts and cultural activities, excellent schools, and affordable housing.
