Research Associate - Exosuit Assisted Gait Retraining
Job Summary
A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Department of Biomechanics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO, https://coe.unomaha.edu/biomechanics) to advance translational research in gait retraining for stroke survivors. She/he will join a team studying home-based gait retraining in rural stroke survivors with a highly scalable and reproducible soft exosuit. We are looking for candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas and a desire to grow in at least one additional area during their postdoctoral training:
- Gait rehabilitation
- Gait analysis
- Markerless motion capture
- Assistive devices, orthoses, and braces
This postdoctoral research associate will be co-advised by Dr. Philippe Malcolm and Dr. Mukul Mukherjee (UNO), in collaboration with Dr. Pierre Fayad at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Representative work from our team includes:
- Metabolically efficient walking assistance using optimized timed forces at the waist | Science Robotics
- UNO Research Discovers Surprising Way to Make Walking Easier – YouTube (illustration of lab facilities)
- Can a passive unilateral hip exosuit diminish walking asymmetry? A randomized trial | Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation (precursor of current project)
- Can Exoskeleton-Resisted Training Improve Walking in Stroke Survivors? (current project)
The position will include conducting lab-based motion capture studies as well as home-based data collection using a portable motion capture system (OpenCap), along with opportunities to engage in manuscript writing, project management, mentoring, and grant development. There will also be opportunities to shape new research in human-in-the-loop optimization of exercise intensity, musculoskeletal simulation, brain activity sensing, and/or business development research.
