Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The William States Lee College of Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank in Construction Engineering and Management fields, with an anticipated start date of August 2026. Candidates with diverse research interests such as those aligned with UNC Charlotte's areas of research focus and distinction are strongly encouraged to apply. Specifically, candidates are expected to have strong research experience in one of the following areas:

  • Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Using AI to enhance the planning, design, construction and management of facilities and infrastructure.
  • Capital Project Lifecycle Management & Integration: Research that unifies planning, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations to deliver predictable, high-performing assets. Focus areas include integrated project delivery; project planning, controls, and risk management; and innovative supply-chain strategies. Methods include systems engineering, optimization and simulation, data analytics, and digital twins, with results validated in collaboration with industry partners.
  • Digital Transformation and Smart Built Environment:Harnessing smart technologies enabling more intelligent, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure and built environment through transformative concepts and processes in engineering, construction, and facilities management. This spans from smart cities to construction sites enhanced with remote sensing, cloud computing, digital twins, and automation.
  • Resilient Infrastructure and Communities: Research on designing robust infrastructure and communities that can withstand, adapt to, and rapidly recover from various disasters and extreme events to ensure the long-term sustainability and resilience of both infrastructure and the communities that rely on it.
  • Workforce, Safety, and Human-Technology Interaction:Developing the workforce through advanced training programs, integrating human factors with technological advancements to enhance workplace productivity, and investigating the dynamic relationship between humans and intelligent technologies for the future of work.

The successful candidate will teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses that advance the program's emphasis on engineering–construction integration and capital project lifecycle management. Priority teaching areas include construction engineering and management, Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM); integrated delivery systems; capital project management; industry best practices; and digital transformation in construction. Expertise that bridges construction–operations integration and/or facilities engineering and management is also highly desirable.

Minimum Experience / Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education Skills and Experience

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in construction engineering, construction management, or a closely related field by the time of contract. Priority will be given to candidates with strong research records evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, potential for success in externally funded research, and a plan for future research that aligns with university and department research focus stated above.
