Essential Functions
Working in a team-based, collaborative environment, the First-Year Engagement Librarian plans, implements, and assesses the engagement initiatives through orientations, information literacy instruction, and outreach to first-year students. They encourage undergraduate student populations to become more active and engaged users of the library, with a special emphasis on those new to library research. The First-Year Engagement Librarian provides library instruction and research assistance both online and in person; maintains team-based working relationships with colleagues in the department, library, and the university; participates in collection development and library liaison responsibilities in assigned subject areas; and fulfills requirements of faculty status in the areas of librarianship, scholarly activities, and service. Anticipated start date is August 2025.

Professional librarians have academic status and faculty rank and are subject to library and university guidelines and criteria for reappointment, promotion and tenure.

Additional Duties
- Research Services:
- Provides general and in-depth research consultations in an appointment-based model.
- Provides roving reference for select colleges/departments.
- Instruction Services:
- Provides general and specialized library instruction to undergraduate and graduate students with a particular focus on general education and/or first-year experience courses and assigned subject areas.
- Develops curriculum for webinars and workshops focused on academic research skill development.
- Creates and maintains instructional materials for students new to academic research, primarily using LibGuides and video creation software.
- First-Year Engagement:
- Coordinates efforts to integrate information literacy learning outcomes into general education and first-year experience courses, including first-year writing, dual enrollment, and other areas pertaining to first-year students.
- Assesses first-year instruction and information literacy outcomes both formally and informally.
- Leads student-centered outreach efforts to students, staff, and faculty new to UNO through programming, events, and orientations in collaboration with partners across campus.
- Coordinates marketing of library services and programming focused on first-year engagement with Communications Specialist.
- Coordinates the delivery of library tours to Dual Enrollment students, public schools, visiting scholars, and other groups.
- Supervision and Coordination:
- Provides supervision to Reference Associates who work in the areas of orientation, instruction, or outreach.
- Collections Management and Liaison:
- Collaborates with faculty in assigned subject areas to develop and communicate the availability of library resources and services.
- Evaluates and selects appropriate resources for the reference collection and assigned subject areas.
- Conducts ongoing review and de-selection of materials.
- Other Job Responsibilities:
- Participates in the evaluation and assessment of library programs and services, including compiling and analyzing statistical data.
- Develops and maintains current knowledge of advances in instruction, outreach, and other areas related to this position. Applies knowledge in continuously improving and advancing library programs and services.
- Participates in department and library planning.
- Develops and documents processes and procedures; periodically reviews and revises processes and procedures as needed.
- Accepts and implements other duties as assigned.
- Faculty Responsibilities:
- Serves on library and/or university committees.
- Participates in cross-departmental projects within the library.
- Participates in professional activities, professional development and scholarly research. and publication activities as outlined in the “Guidelines on Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Recommendations for Faculty Members of the University Library.”
Required Qualifications
- ALA accredited MLS degree.
- Minimum of one year experience with information literacy or library instruction in an academic or research library.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Ability to provide reference services in multiple subject areas.
- Broad understanding of both print and electronic reference sources and the impact of technology on libraries.
- Ability to set and attain effective goals.
- Excellent organizational, planning, interpersonal, communication and written skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with staff and the university community.
- Must be flexible and capable of working successfully individually as well as in teams in a changing library environment.
Preferred Qualifications
An earned subject master’s degree in addition to the MLS.
