Summary: recruitment for one position of Assistant Professor in the disciplinary area of Philosophy.
In accordance with Article 39 of the University Teaching Career Statute (ECDU), approved by Decree-Law no. 448/79, of 13 November, in its current wording, the Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon, Professor Alexandra Curvelo, acting by delegation of powers in the terms specified in paragraph b) of no. 1 of Order no. 13828/2025, of 20 November, hereby makes it known that an international documentary recruitment procedure is open for a period of 30 working days, counting from the day immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República, for the recruitment of one position of Assistant Professor at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon, for the development of teaching and research activities in the disciplinary area of Philosophy, namely in the domains of Philosophy of Knowledge and Epistemology, and Logic and Philosophy of Language. The teaching and research activities will be carried out within the Department of Philosophy, in articulation with the Research Unit IFILNOVA. This position may be funded under the 2nd edition of the FCT-Tenure Programme.
The opening of this recruitment procedure, as well as the appointment of the Selection Committee, were authorized by an Order of the Rector of NOVA University Lisbon, Doctor Paulo Pereira, on the 08th of July 2026.
This is an international application procedure based on merit, and follows the provisions of Articles 37 et seq. of ECDU and of NOVA University Lisbon's Regulation for University Teaching Career Applications, published in an annex to Order no. 3012/2015, of 20 February, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 58, of 24 March.
I – Admission requirements:
- In accordance with article 41-A of the ECDU, holding a PhD degree is a requirement for applying to this position.
- Candidates must hold a PhD degree in Philosophy; candidates holding a PhD degree in other areas may also apply, provided they present a scientific curriculum in the domains of Philosophy of Knowledge and Epistemology, and Logic and Philosophy of Language.
- Demonstrate proficiency in either Portuguese or English, both spoken and written.
II – Submission of applications:
- Applications must be submitted exclusively through the online platform https://apply.fcsh.unl.pt/ by selecting the procedure for which you wish to apply (procedure code: DOCAUX-NOVAFCSH-26-12), by the deadline specified in this Call for Applications.
- Applications must be formalized, under penalty of exclusion, with the supporting documents listed below. All the required documents should preferably be submitted in PDF format. Short names for files are recommended. Links are not accepted as substitutes for these documents.
a) Document proving the fulfilment of the legal requirements demanded in paragraphs 1 and 2 of Section I;
b) Sworn statement attesting to proficiency in Portuguese or English at a level sufficient for teaching purposes;
c) Candidates of foreign nationality, except those from Portuguese-speaking countries, must submit, at the time of application, a sworn declaration committing to demonstrate, within one year after the signing of a possible contract, a level of proficiency in Portuguese (written and spoken) that allows the assignment of teaching duties without any communication limitations in Portuguese with students;
d) Curriculum vitae of the candidate, indicating the works carried out and published, as well as the activities performed regarding all the functions and responsibilities of university teachers mentioned in Articles 4 and 5 of the ECDU. The curriculum vitae must be organized in accordance with Section III of this Public Notice, under penalty of exclusion;
e) Copies of three works mentioned in the curriculum vitae which the candidate considers to be the most representative of their academic trajectory;
f) Scientific and pedagogical development project that the candidate proposes to implement in the future (up to 4000 words).

- Applications duly accompanied by the above-mentioned documents must be submitted within 30 working days, counting from the day immediately after the publication of this Notice in Diário da República.
- All documents submitted as part of the application must be in Portuguese or English.
III – The criteria, indicators and weightings for the evaluation and ranking of candidates are as follows:
1 – Scientific Component of the Curriculum Vitae (50%):
- Scientific publications (namely books, articles in indexed scientific journals, book chapters), with the candidate required to select three publications (article, book chapter or book) considered most representative of their academic trajectory (0–35);
- Coordination or co-coordination of scientific projects funded through competitive international calls organized by national or international scientific agencies and/or individual scientific projects developed after the doctoral degree that have been funded through competitive international calls organized by national or international scientific agencies (0–10);
- Presentations at scientific conferences and colloquia, and other relevant scientific activities with significant internationalization (0–5).
2 – Teaching Component (30%):
- Documented teaching experience in the disciplinary area and domains covered by the procedure, or in advanced technical/scientific training (0–5);
- Submission of syllabi, lesson plans and other teaching materials for two course units relevant to the disciplinary area and domains covered by the procedure (0–20);
- Supervision of students in non-coursework components of doctoral and master's programs or internships (0–5);
3 – Scientific and Pedagogical Development Project, up to 4,000 words (15%):
- Contribution to fulfilling the mission of the institution, namely with regard to the development of teaching in the disciplinary area and domains covered by the procedure, including the international dimension (0–6);
- Contribution to fulfilling the mission of the institution, namely with regard to the development of research in the disciplinary area and domains covered by the competition, including the international dimension (0–6);
- Contribution to fulfilling the mission of the institution, namely with regard to attracting competitive funding (0–3);
4 – Other Relevant Activities (5%):
- University outreach activities and/or knowledge transfer to society (0–2);
- Additional training activities and/or relevant professional experience in the area of the competition (0–3).

V – Evaluation of Applications:
- After the deadline for applications, the Selection Committee shall meet to evaluate and rank the candidates.
- Based on the assessment of the curricula vitae, their suitability to the scientific area for which the procedure is open, the remaining application documents, and the classifications awarded in accordance with the criteria, indicators and weighting factors set out above, the Selection Committee shall admit the candidates whose final classification, in terms of absolute merit, is equal to or higher than 50, and exclude those whose final classification is below 50.
- Candidates who are not admitted shall be notified to comment thereon, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure.
- Once the admitted candidates have been determined, on the basis of the classifications referred to above, the Selection Committee shall issue a written report containing the ranking of the admitted candidates.
- The ranking of the admitted candidates shall be determined by vote of the members of the Selection Committee, respecting the order presented in the document referred to in the previous paragraph, pursuant to subparagraphs a) to f) of paragraph 11 of Article 16 of NOVA University Lisbon's Regulation for University Teaching Career Applications.

Candidates who have been admitted or rejected will be notified by email through the online platform https://apply.fcsh.unl.pt/, in accordance with subparagraph c) of N.º1 and subparagraph b) of N.º 2, Article 112º of the Code of Administrative Procedure.

VIII
If the PhD degree of the selected candidate has been obtained from a foreign university, its recognition must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August 2016. The candidates must fulfil all formal obligations laid down in that diploma until the date of the signature of the contract, under penalty of exclusion.
