Assistant Professor Music (Tuba)

The Department of Music seeks applicants for a tenure track, faculty position to serve as Principal Tubist with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra beginning August 1, 2026. Position is a full-time, benefitted position. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, maintaining scholarly productivity, and participating in service at the department, college, and university levels.

The Department of Music is made up of ~30 faculty/artist teachers and over 150 music majors and minors. The department presents over 150 musical performances for the public each year. In addition, several of the major performing ensembles of the department travel throughout Georgia, the Southeast, and abroad, performing for schools, civic groups, and as part of community concert series. The Department of Music recently expanded into Powell Hall, a newly renovated, historically preserved, state-of-the-art music facility; featuring new administrative offices, a stunning 200-seat recital hall, faculty studios, rehearsal studios, and practice rooms. The Valdosta Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is a professional ensemble housed within the Department of Music at Valdosta State University, offering a dynamic experiential learning environment where faculty musicians perform alongside students. This unique collaboration fosters artist growth, mentorship, and real-world performance experience for emerging musicians. The orchestra is widely recognized for its excellence, having earned the 2014 American Prize in Orchestral Performance. The VSO plays a vital role in enriching the cultural life of the South Georgia region.

Applicants must submit:

  • Contact information for three professional references, one of which must be from the applicant’s current institution.
  • Links to performances, no longer than 30 minutes.
  • Links to two applied tuba or euphonium lesson samples.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate applied Tuba and Euphonium for majors and minors.
  • Recruiting and maintaining an active Tuba and Euphonium studio.
  • Working with brass chamber ensembles and studio classes.
  • Performing with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra as Principal Tuba.
  • Maintaining an active regional, national, and international presence as a performer.
  • Ability to teach in additional areas of Music (theory, history, etc.), or general education courses (music appreciation, etc.).
  • Additional teaching duties may be expected based on qualifications and departmental needs.
  • Faculty members are expected to make substantive contributions to the department, university, and community through service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. or DMA in Tuba or Euphonium by appointment date.
  • Experience teaching college-level applied Tuba and Euphonium.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A record demonstrating a strong commitment to recruiting.
  • A record of effective teaching appropriate to the applicant’s career stage.
  • A record of success as a professional performer.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting.
  • Knowledge of online/hybrid teaching and Learning Management Systems.
  • A record demonstrating a proven commitment to creating an environment that contributes to mentoring and engaging students.
