Position Description
The Department of Biology at Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the broad fields of Ecology and Evolution. The successful candidate will be expected to complement and build on existing research strengths within the Department, which span a diversity of scales and systems. Current departmental research areas include evolutionary genomics, microbial ecology and evolution, reproductive evolution, organismal functional morphology, organismal ecology, community ecology, and ecosystem science.
Research may range from gene to ecosystem scales, employing approaches such as functional genomics, behavioral, physiological, computational methods, as well as acoustic and satellite remote sensing and field experiments.
Areas of particular interest include those related to global change biology as it influences organismal biology or ecosystems.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Develop a rigorous, externally funded research program.
- Participate in graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
- Engage in service to the department, university, and professional community.
Research Environment
The research environment at Syracuse University is highly collaborative, both within and across departments, centers, and institutes. Faculty benefit from strong connections with the BioInspired Institute and the nearby State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF).
The successful candidate will establish their research laboratory in the world-class Life Sciences Complex at Syracuse University.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, or a related field.
- Demonstrated record of outstanding research and scholarly achievement.
- Commitment to teaching excellence and to fostering diversity and inclusion in academic environments.
Responsibilities
- Teach two courses per year (1:1 load).
- Develop and maintain an externally funded research program.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
- Contribute to service at departmental, college, and university levels.
Compensation and Support
Syracuse University offers a competitive salary, start-up funds, and laboratory space.
Salary offers will be based on education, experience, relevant skills, and academic discipline in the context of the home department or college.
