Job Description
The Ohio University Department of History is hiring one or more assistant professors of instruction of American history who are committed to student success. The person(s) hired will be expected to teach multiple sections of an introductory course focused on U.S. civic tradition and will have the opportunity to teach upper-division courses in U.S. history. Candidates with experience in public history and pre-twentieth-century U.S. history are especially encouraged to apply. Courses will be delivered mostly in-person at the Athens campus. The teaching load is typically eight courses per academic year on a semester schedule.
The position is full-time, non-tenure-track, benefits-eligible, and begins in Fall 2026.
History Department: The Department of History has 21 full-time faculty across the main campus and five regional campuses in Southern and Central Ohio. Situated within the College of Arts & Sciences, the department is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service. It serves students in the undergraduate major, M.A., M.S.S. and Ph.D. degree programs, and across the university in humanities and social-science general-education courses. College of Arts & Sciences: This college is central to Ohio University's transformative learning experience. The foundational instruction for the entire university, delivered through the general education and liberal arts curriculum, is provided by the College of Arts and Sciences. Responsibilities: The regular teaching load is four courses per semester. The person hired will be expected to teach multiple sections of an introductory course focused on U.S. civic tradition and will have the opportunity to teach upper-division courses in U.S. history. The candidate will be expected to deliver mostly in-person courses, but there may be a need for some online teaching.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD in history or public history by the start date of employment, active engagement in the field of U.S. history, and prior teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with significant teaching experience in U.S. history.
