Assistant Professor of Musicology - School of Music
Description
This position is full-time, 9-month, tenure-track, benefits eligible beginning August 14, 2026. The assignment will include teaching music history courses for music majors, general education courses in music for non-majors, and seminars for graduate students; serving on master's and doctoral committees; and acting as a research advisor for students enrolled in the M.A. program in musicology and the D.M.A. programs in performance. Ideal candidates will demonstrate proficiency in a range of topics, historical methods, and theoretical perspectives. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research and professional development. Although all areas of scholarship are welcome, we are particularly seeking a creative and dynamic teacher interested in western musical traditions. Participation in School of Music activities, recruitment and retention of students, and faculty governance are required.
Active participation in professional organizations in the field is expected, and the successful candidate will participate in and contribute to the School, serve on committees, and engage in the university and professional communities.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, conduct cutting-edge musicological research, and foster a positive and collaborative environment for colleagues and students alike. The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in musicology or a closely related field by the time of appointment (August 2026) and has taught successfully at the collegiate level for at least two years in musicology or music history. The successful candidate will demonstrate a broad knowledge of western art music, a working knowledge of jazz, popular music, and/or non-western musical traditions, and a commitment to research and publication with the potential for national and international achievement as a scholar. Additionally, the successful applicant will be collaborative, intellectually adventurous, and willing to embrace all aspects of music studies. The School of Music seeks a candidate who will demonstrate exemplary communication skills, collegiality, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the University.
