Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Position Description

The History and Philosophy Program at The University of Texas at Dallas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Philosophy.

The ideal candidate will possess expertise and an active research program in Early or Late Modern Philosophy broadly construed, roughly from Descartes to Hegel. The candidate may also work in the intersections of this historical period with Non-Western philosophical traditions or other underrepresented areas of philosophy. The program has need for a candidate to regularly teach a graduate seminar on a major figure, topic, or theme in Early or Late Modern Philosophy. Regular undergraduate teaching in the candidate's area(s) of expertise will also be expected. The philosophy faculty offer a B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy and contribute to a Ph.D. program in the Humanities.

The standard teaching load is two courses per semester. Duties include active research, graduate supervision, normal committee service, and classroom teaching at all levels. Located in suburban Dallas (Richardson), UT Dallas is a dynamic, growing research institution with a vibrant student body (ca. 30,000) and a strong research faculty.

The appointment commences for the fall 2026 semester.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience: A PhD or equivalent in Philosophy or a related discipline is required prior to employment; those with ABD status will be considered at the application/interviewing stage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

The History and Philosophy Program

The philosophy degrees offered at UT Dallas are housed within a joint History and Philosophy Program in the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology. History and Philosophy faculty members collaborate on several degree programs and interdisciplinary research is both welcome and encouraged. Faculty members who work primarily within philosophy hold in common specialization in critical approaches to the history of philosophy —which forms the core of our degree programs—even as the faculty possess a wide array of expertise in other areas of philosophy. These include sub-fields spanning both Continental and Analytic traditions and include areas such as Hermeneutics, Phenomenology, Deconstruction, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Psychiatry, Philosophy of Science and Medicine, Ethics and Moral Psychology, Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Philosophy of Gender and Feminism, Chinese Philosophy, as well as Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Philosophy.

Application Instructions

Applicants should upload the following:

  • Full curriculum vitae and cover letter summarizing their interests and qualifications for the position.
  • Statement of teaching philosophy describing their conceptualizations of teaching and learning, and teaching and assessment methods, and how their teaching practices will engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Research statement describing past, present, and future research, including how they mentor (or will mentor) student researchers and foster (or will foster) collaborative research environments.
  • A writing/publication sample.
  • Full contact information for at least three academic or professional references.

Priority will be given to completed applications received by February 1, 2026. Reviews will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed on April 1, 2026.
