Position Summary: The Communications and Media Studies Department at SUNY Cortland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sound Design. This position will teach and assess learning in the practice of media production including courses in Audio Production, Sound Design, Introduction to Media Production, and related communication and cinema courses. Participate in continued program and curricular development, demonstrate a sustained and productive program of research or creative activity, engage in service to the department, school, university, and community, maintain regular office hours as required, and provide regular advising and mentoring to students.

SUNY Cortland’s Communication and Media Studies Department was recently ranked twentieth in the country as a high-value program. In 2026, department will begin teaching in a newly renovated building. Our facilities include an Avid Pro Tools audio studio, a three-camera Ross Carbonite studio, and a Christie cinema screening and post-production theater featuring Dolby Atmos. The department is committed to providing our students with significant experiential learning opportunities including both internships and study abroad. The department is also home to student run media outlets including the campus newspaper, FM radio station, and television station.

- COM 242 Audio Production
- COM 347 Sound Design
- COM 110 Introduction to Media Production
- CIN 225 Aesthetics and Film
- CIN 329 Special Topics in Cinema Studies
Scholarship/Research
- Demonstrate a sustained and productive program of research or creative activity.
Service
- Engage in service to the department, school, college, and community.
- Maintain regular office hours as required.
- Provide regular advising and mentoring to students.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
- Reports to the academic department chair
- Works closely with department faculty
Required Qualifications
- Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) related to audio production for video and film.
- Demonstrated skills in sound design for film and video.
- Proficiency in the use of Avid Pro Tools.
- Familiarity with a variety DAW software.
- Proficiency in audio studio and field recording for film and video.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant teaching and professional experience.
- Ability to integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning for audio into the classroom.
- Ability to contribute to other program areas including video production and Cinema Studies.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
