About the Department/College

The Department of Educational Specialties (ESP) is part of the College of Education (COE) and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in applied behavior analysis, special education, bilingual and multicultural education, career and technical education, and educational technology. Courses are designed with flexibility in mind to support students as they balance work, family, and academic responsibilities, and coursework is directly connected to the knowledge and skills required in applied settings. The Department of Educational Specialties prepares professionals to meet the needs of all learners in today's classrooms and communities. As a core faculty member, the successful candidate will be involved in teaching, accreditation, and programmatic decision-making for the graduate programs in ABA.

About the Position

The Department of Educational Specialties is seeking a full-time, career- track (non-tenure) faculty position beginning Fall 2026 to coordinate the MEd in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Graduate Certificate programs. The successful candidate will teach asynchronous online courses for students preparing to take the national exam to become BCBAs, as well as lead the process of securing professional association accreditation to meet the BACB's 2032 Pathway 1 requirements. We are interested in candidates who have experience providing behavior analytic services and have mentored and supervised others providing interventions based on the science of ABA. We encourage applications from candidates who have experience with accreditation and program leadership.

This position is located on the Flagstaff Mountain Campus.

Responsibilities Include

  • Teach online graduate classes in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Positive Behavior Support (PBS).
  • Coordinate the MEd in ABA and PBS Graduate Certificate programs preparing future BCBAs to address the market demand for professional practitioners in the field.
  • Lead the process of securing professional association accreditation for the MEd in ABA program to fulfill the BACB's 2032 Pathway 1 requirements.
  • Recruit and advise students in the ABA and PBS programs while teaming with other university departments to promote the admission and matriculation of students.
  • Participate in the development and management of quality assessment within the program.
  • Collaborate with other faculty to promote innovation and continuous improvement in course content and pedagogy.
  • Fulfill service responsibilities to the department, college, university, and profession.

Minimum Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

  • An earned doctorate in Special Education, Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • ABD candidates may be considered only if they plan to have their degree by the start date.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD or terminal degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education, or Related Field
  • A current Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential [BCBA-D preferred].
  • Online teaching experience (can include college teaching as a graduate assistant).
  • Clinical and supervisory experience as a practicing behavior analyst.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.*

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into teaching including experience with online delivery of higher education and associated support systems.
  • Experience with program development and assessment toward accreditation.
  • Ability/experience or strong interest in recruiting, advising, and mentoring graduate students.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate level courses in applied behavior analysis (in-person, blended, or online).
  • Experience supervising and training students in the process of applying to take the national exam.
  • Experience in networking/collaborating within and across disciplines within the profession.
  • Demonstrated efficacy in working with people with a rich variety of perspectives and appreciation for the diversity of rural and southwest communities.
  • Experience promoting community engagement, educational justice, and/or equitable access to contextually appropriate behavioral interventions.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Essential Work Competencies:

  • Proficiency using various technologies to develop and deliver instruction.
  • Clear, comprehensible, and cohesive oral and written communication.
  • Ability maintaining accurate records (student files, program data, compliance documents).
  • Skills in building positive relationships and resolving conflicts diplomatically.
  • Competence with spreadsheets, databases, and reporting tools.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in the science of ABA with the ability to transmit content comprehensively to students.
  • Interacts and communicates successfully with colleagues and community members.
  • Acts in a way that embodies the mission, vision, and values of NAU and the College of Education.
  • Maintains ethical behavior and the ability to demonstrate ethical decision making related to training concerns.
  • Manages multiple projects with multiple deadlines while meeting or exceeding expectations.
  • Communicates ideas and information effectively in both verbal and written form.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience, salary is $60,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
