Job Summary
The University of Utah's Department of Surgery is seeking a strategic and experienced Associate Director of Business Operations & Clinical Data Management to lead operational excellence and data-driven decision-making across the department. This role blends business operations leadership with oversight of clinical data management strategy, ensuring alignment with institutional goals, regulatory standards, and high-quality patient care outcomes.
This position reports directly to the Director of Clinical Operations and serves as a key partner in advancing departmental strategy, performance, and innovation.
This senior leadership role is responsible for leading cross-functional initiatives, and advancing both operational performance and data integrity within a complex academic healthcare environment.
About the Team
The Department of Surgery Operations Team supports a diverse and high-performing clinical and academic enterprise. The team partners closely with clinical leadership, faculty, APCs, research teams, and administrative units to drive operational efficiency, data integrity, and strategic growth.
With a strong focus on collaboration and continuous improvement, the team leads initiatives that enhance clinical operations, optimize workflows, and strengthen data-driven decision-making. This role will play a critical part in shaping how data and operations intersect to support patient care, research excellence, and institutional priorities.
Responsibilities
Business Operations Leadership
- Partner with leadership to oversee analysis of business operations to support strategic initiatives
- Drive efficiency by identifying redundancies, removing barriers, and optimizing workflows
- Partner with leadership to enhance decision-making speed and organizational agility
- Analyze and improve business processes, including workflows, procedures, roles, and reporting structures
- Develop tools such as process maps, organizational charts, and strategy maps to support operational improvements
- Evaluate cross-departmental processes to improve integration and performance
- Communicate complex operational insights to senior leadership and stakeholders
- Ensure alignment with University mission, strategic priorities, and performance metrics
Clinical Data Management & Strategy
- Lead the planning, execution, and oversight of clinical data management activities, systems, and processes
- Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for data collection, handling, review, and transfer
- Provide strategic guidance on clinical data collection, cleaning, validation, and auditing processes
- Ensure the highest levels of data quality, integrity, and regulatory compliance
- Collaborate cross-functionally to align data management practices with operational and strategic goals
- Lead workflow assessments to capture business and clinical requirements and translate them into system solutions
- Parter with IT and end-users to support application integration and alignment with clinical and operational needs
- Serve as a subject matter expert in clinical systems, influencing best practices and standards across the department
Leadership & People Management
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration
- Serve as a key leader driving change and innovation across the department
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
Associate Director, Business Operations Analysis Management: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 10 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 8 years of directly related work experience.
Preferences
- Experience in academic medicine, healthcare operations, or clinical informatics
- Deep knowledge of EMR systems and clinical application ecosystems
- Expertise in process improvement, data governance, and organizational design
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills
- Experience with database systems, data workflows, and vendor management
