Job Description Summary
The Associate Director serves as the instructional lead and advisor for the Cognitive Science major and key program staff for MindCORE, Penn's hub for the integrative study of the mind. This role is a unique blend of instruction, academic administration, advising, research mentorship, and program and community building reporting to both the Faculty Director of Cognitive Science and the Executive Director of MindCORE (primary). The role involves training future cognitive scientists through the major and supporting a community of students & researchers in mind sciences to catalyze new research on the mind and foster innovative collaborations and programming under MindCORE.
Job Description
Penn has a long and prominent tradition in cognitive science, with a special focus on formal and computational methods for research and education. The College of Arts and Sciences offers the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Cognitive Science, as well as a minor in Cognitive Science. As an interdisciplinary major, Cognitive Science is supported and staffed within MindCORE (Mind Center for Outreach, Research and Education). MindCORE seeks to unite researchers, programs, and initiatives involving human intelligence and behavior across the University and connect to our Philadelphia community.
Job Responsibilities
- Prepare and teach Intro to Cognitive Science one semester each year and Research Practicum in Cognitive Science (or an equivalent course) in the fall and spring semesters, as needed by the department. Prepare lectures, assessments, and examinations; supervise TAs; and hold weekly office hours.
- Advise students; maintain student records; certify students for graduation. Oversee recruitment and graduation events, student awards, and any student councils to support the major during the academic year.
- Advise and support student research activities including independent studies, capstones, and semester and summer research experiences under MindCORE. Oversee administration of student research funds.
- Plan and implement programming in support of MindCORE goals for community building across mind sciences at Penn; and MindCORE initiatives in outreach, research, and/or education.
Qualifications
A PhD Degree in a field related to Cognitive Science (psychology, linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience, etc.) is required. Laboratory experience is essential, and proven administrative, scientific, and program management skills, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

The Associate Director will be responsible for planning and implementing MindCORE programming, though there is room for flexibility in shaping the Associate Director's administrative portfolio. Please address:

- Impact: How would your focus in these areas specifically support cognitive science at Penn and/or foster interdisciplinary connections across Penn or with the greater community?
