Job Description

The Graduate Program is the division of Harvard Law School responsible for the Master of Laws (LL.M.) and the Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) degrees, and for various aspects of graduate legal studies, including the Visiting Scholar/Visiting Researcher program. Within the Graduate Program, the Associate Director of Administration and Student Affairs oversees pre-arrival information, course selection and course management, overall programming, and student life management for all three programs.

As Associate Director of Administration and Student Affairs, you will:

  • Manage academic and student life programming for LLM and SJD students and for Visiting Researchers and Visiting Scholars; collaborate with Associate Director for Graduate Writing and Academics to support and strengthen writing initiatives for LL.M. students.
  • Supervise all aspects of pre-arrival information, course selection, related preparation, and ongoing support for LL.M. students; oversee degree requirements, milestones, and related academic matters for LLM and SJD students.
  • Supervise Graduate Program Orientation, informational presentations, collaboration with other Law School and University Offices on commencement activities, and other academic and social events throughout the academic year.
  • Serve as an on-call resource for student support and emergencies.
  • Manage New York Bar eligibility information and related resources for LL.M. students.
  • Manage departmental publications.
  • Oversee office operations and, in partnership with Assistant Dean, manage department’s operational budget.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean to select, train, supervise, and mentor Graduate Program Fellows.
  • Review, evaluate, and make recommendations on LLM applications, including assessing substantive legal essays for cogency.
  • Contribute to review process for International Legal Studies grants and programs. Serve as resource to the Committee on Graduate Studies, designing complex reports, providing data, and other administrative information.
  • Effectively manage staff, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as needed.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who are/have:

  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal, numerical, organizational, problem-solving, and supervisory skills.
  • Enjoy working with international students and a wide array of constituent groups, representing the Graduate Program through collaboration with departments throughout HLS and the University.
  • Have a thorough understanding of international legal systems and the U.S. law classroom.
  • JD (or other advanced degree) preferred; background in social work or similar on-the-job experience also a plus. Candidates holding a JD or equivalent law degree will be considered with 5 or more years’ related experience.
  • Excellent judgment and discretion. Must be self-directed and able to manage workflow in deadline-driven environment with frequently changing priorities.
  • Experience living/working abroad a big plus.
  • The ability to respond with flexibility and imagination to unanticipated situations.

Work Format Details: This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
