Job Description

The Associate Director for Student Leadership and Engagement is a student-centered, collaborative, and intentional leadership educator and advisor who strategically leads a vibrant and inclusive campus community through leadership development, engaging student clubs, student events, and late night and weekend programming and campus-wide student engagement. Reporting to the Assistant Dean/Director for Student Engagement and Belonging, the Associate Director for Student Leadership and Engagement develops and implements a comprehensive leadership development curriculum and leadership programming for students, manages and oversees recognized student organization, and is responsible for developing a cohesive student experience calendar, ensuring meaningful learning outcomes through co-curricular engagement and programming and managing the institution's student engagement platform.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership Development & Programming (30%)

  • Develop and implement leadership development programs in line with inclusive leadership development theories and engagement leadership competencies, including, but not limited to, Emerging Leaders Institute, Club Leader Training, leadership workshops, and the Identity Leadership Retreat.
  • Coordinate the student leader's selection, training, and evaluation process in collaboration with other areas in the Division of Student Success. Create timelines, information session content, applications, interview processes, combined selection meetings, and position descriptions and evaluation documents as a part of the student leader selection process. Develop student leader curriculum and facilitate in-services for newly selected and elected student leader positions.
  • Assess student leader learning outcomes and measure student efficacy, skill development, and knowledge acquisition and support student ongoing personal reflection and leadership competency development.
  • Coordinate with campus partners, including, but not limited to, the Career Connections Center and Alumni & Friends Engagement in supporting students in leveraging student experiences for life after Clark.
  • Support the development and implantation of a leadership pathway as a part of Clark's co-curricular transcript and the Clark Experience.

Recognized Student Organizations Management & Oversight (30%)

  • Provide support to over 120 clubs and organizations, their student leaders and advisors, including supporting club training and resource materials, attending meetings and events, engagement with advisors, and connections with campus partners.
  • Develop club leader management and leadership programs and workshops to support student organization leaders and advisors on topics including, but not limited to, Clark Engage, managing space, running effective meetings, marketing, inclusion, transition, programing, risk management and adhering to policies.
  • Oversee the annual club registration and recognition process for clubs and organizations, including review of charters, transition materials, and founding documents, as well as ensuring that recognized student organizations are in compliance with university and SLICE policies and procedures.
  • Review and update the Recognized Student Organization (RSO) Manual and training documents for students annually in collaboration with campus partners, including but not limited to the Office of Facilities Management, Events, University Police, and Clark University' legal team. Develop training materials for club advisors.
  • Build relationships with all student leaders and student clubs, with an emphasis on the recognized performance student organizations to support them on their leadership journey and building healthy and inclusive engagement opportunities for students.
  • Engage with and advise student organizations and leaders regarding event planning, organization management, conflict management and mediation, culturally relevant leadership, and identity development.
  • Serve as the primary manager of the Engage Platform for recognized student organizations and events within the SLICE team, ensuring that all information pertaining to recognized student organization including, but not limited to, rosters, mission, advisor information, and events are accurate and up to date.
  • Support key student clubs and programming events as assigned or needed and serve as a resource and support for all students engaging with SLICE.
  • Advise the Clark Undergraduate Student Council (CUSC), which includes, but is not limited to, meeting weekly with executive board members, attending CUSC meetings, and reviewing proposed policy changes and/or legislation.

Programming & Events (15%)

  • Oversee, manage, and execute the fall and spring involvement fair for recognized student organizations during the first week of classes.
  • Provide strategic vision, leadership, and guidance to the Assistant Director for Events and Programming in the facilitation and creation of a comprehensive program of activities that enhances student sense of belonging and cultivates community.
  • Serve on and manage key student experience committees, including the student experience committee and the senior offboarding committee.
  • Lead and advise at least one large campus tradition each semester, such as Halloweekend, International Gala, Spree Day or Senior Week.
  • Staff campus traditions and SLICE signature programs as needed.

Supervision and Leadership (15%)

  • Provide direct supervision, feedback, training, and direction for the Assistant Director Events and Programming and the Craft Studio instructor. Supervise graduate assistants and/or student employees as assigned.
  • Foster a collaborative, student-centered team culture focused on learning and development.
  • Support the hiring, supervision, feedback, training, and direction to para-professional staff (graduate assistants, professional assistants, student workers, mentors, etc.) in the implementation of programs and initiatives and execution of assigned/affiliated tasks.
  • Provide divisional and university leadership when necessary regarding the student experience and activities and programs that support a vibrant transformational student experience, including the development of advisor resources and training

Student Success, Community Engagement, and Inclusion (10%)

  • Actively support and lead university-wide efforts to promote student retention, belonging and identity development.
  • Center equity, inclusion and student voice while critically working to ensure student engagement, belonging, wellbeing, retention, and success.
  • Serve as a care case manager for the care team, providing additional support and outreach to students within assigned cases and ensuring proper documentation and follow-up.
  • Play a key role in campus traditions and high-level university initiatives and experiences, such as opening weekend, undergraduate onboarding, orientation, commencement, family weekend, traditional events, etc.
  • Promote efficiency and courtesy throughout the University community, ensuring consistency with Student Success' mission and values.
  • Develop assessment plans and key performance indicators and metrics to demonstrate success.
  • Remain cognizant of the University's mission and identity, the constant promotion of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and the importance of student voices.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor concerning pertinent departmental and University matters.
  • Serve as an active and responsible committee member for divisional and university-wide committees and communicate relevant information as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned that are in the best interest of the Division of Student Success.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs Education, or related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership programming, event management and coordination, and working with student organizations or clubs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with students, student leaders, campus partners, faculty, and the community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of student needs, inclusive practices, and the importance of belonging in student success
  • Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule to support student programming needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervision experience preferred.
  • Experience with technology including MS Office, Engage, Slate, EMS Event Management System, Qualtrics, social media, and familiarity with Banner.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a dynamic, diverse environment with a committed and engaged faculty and highly creative student population.
  • Strong knowledge of student development theory, leadership theories, and engagement and programming best practices.
  • Experience with assessment tools, technology systems, engagement metrics, and learning outcomes.
  • Possess a collaborative disposition, strong and effective communicator across multiple mediums and audiences.

Additional Information

Expected Hiring Range: $54,800 to $60,250

Pay Transparency Disclosure:
The compensation for this position will be determined based on factors that include available budget, internal equity, and the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, education, and other job-related credentials. This range represents Clark University's good-faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting consistent with Clark's compensation philosophy and internal alignment.
