About us

UCL is a diverse global community of world-class academics, students, industry links, external partners, and alumni. Our powerful collective of individuals and institutions work together to explore new possibilities. Academic excellence is demonstrated by our 30 Nobel laureates and our top ranking in the UK for research strength. We are a global university with 14,300 employees and over 150 nationalities represented in a student body of 43,800 students. Our main location in Central London has recently been augmented by a campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

About the role

This fixed-term teaching role will support key undergraduate and postgraduate modules, aligning with our focus on resilient infrastructure, structural systems, and societal impact. It offers a unique opportunity for an early-career academic or practitioner to contribute to impactful education while gaining experience in a top global university environment.

Using your strong background in sustainable structural engineering, particularly in efficient concrete structures and assessment of existing structures, you will deliver undergraduate teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including supervising coursework, providing appropriate assessments and contributing to the overall student experience. You will take responsibility for core teaching activities on a number of specific modules relating to sustainable structural engineering, scenario-based assessment of existing structures, carbon assessments and civil engineering in practice (including participation in a residential field trip to the Constructionarium).

About you

Key requirements of the role are:

  • A PhD (or to be close to completion) in structural engineering/concrete structures or equivalent
  • Higher education or other relevant teaching qualification
  • Evidence of strong backgrounds in structural engineering, sustainable practices, including embodied carbon assessments, and the behaviour of reinforced concrete structures.
  • Experience of supervising postgraduate level research projects and group projects on structural engineering, sustainable practices including embodied carbon assessments, and the behaviour of reinforced concrete structures.
  • Demonstrated research experience in structural engineering, sustainable practices including embodied carbon assessments, and the behaviour of reinforced concrete structures.
  • Proven track record of working effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in marking coursework (essays, exam papers, and presentations) and giving constructive feedback to students.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload, to coordinate with other colleagues involved in module and programme provision
  • Ability to use on-line teaching technologies (e.g. Moodle) and other ICT technologies to develop learning materials
  • Ability to undertake academic-related administrative tasks, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Commitment to providing a responsive and helpful service.
  • Commitment to listening to others and supporting them with compassion.
  • Being clear on how your work fits into overall UCL objectives.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of advancing equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Experience of supporting students by means of mentoring and academic advising
