About the Role
The School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Newcastle is strengthening its academic portfolio in complex care/mental health wellbeing and service innovation. We invite applications for an Associate Professor position as part of this strategic expansion.
This role sits within a broader program of growth designed to build capability in areas of high workforce demand and health system reform. We are looking for expertise in complex care and mental health across acute and community contexts, primary health care, alcohol and other drugs, forensic or custodial settings, lived experience, trauma informed practice, digital and technology enabled models of care, population health, service redesign and policy.
You will provide academic leadership across teaching, research and engagement, shaping contemporary curriculum development and advancing research that informs practice, systems and workforce development. The positions offer the opportunity to influence care delivery across regional, rural and metropolitan settings through strong partnerships with health services, industry and community organisations.
About you
You are an experienced academic registered as a nurse in Australia with a PhD and expertise in complex care, wellbeing, mental health or a closely aligned field. You bring a sustained and internationally recognised research profile, demonstrated educational leadership, and experience building partnerships that extend beyond the university.
You are motivated by shaping future workforce capability, strengthening research impact and mentoring the next generation of scholars. Experience in interdisciplinary research, digital innovation or the use of AI in teaching or research will be viewed favourably.
Essential criteria:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA, with no restrictions
- Completed doctoral qualification
- Postgraduate qualification in mental health or aligned field (for example community health, primary health care, alcohol and other drugs, forensic or custodial health, trauma informed practice, public or population health, or health services research)
- Demonstrated record of impactful publication or non-traditional research output in high quality outlets, including evidence of national and international research collaborations and partnerships
- Successful supervision of Higher Degree by Research students to timely completion as primary supervisor
- Demonstrated teaching excellence and curriculum leadership at course or program level
- Demonstrated strategic contribution to governance, mentoring and external engagement
