Associate Professor of Integrative Arts Studies and Studio Art

Job Description:

Assistant or Associate Professor of Studio Art
Tenure-Track Faculty Position specializing in 3D Multidisciplinary Art
Goucher College – Departments of Studio Art and Integrative Arts Studies

Since its founding in 1885, Goucher College has fostered a spirit of curiosity and discovery. As a private, non-profit liberal arts college of approximately 1,000 undergraduate and 700 graduate students, Goucher is dedicated to preparing students to think critically, engage across disciplines, and contribute meaningfully to a rapidly changing world. Small class sizes, a rigorous curriculum, and dedicated faculty and staff allow for personalized mentorship of each student. Named one of the most innovative colleges in the country by U.S. News & World Report, Goucher is a leader in global education and was one of the first, and remains one of the only, colleges in the U.S. to provide 100% of its students with the opportunity to study abroad at no additional charge.

The Studio Art and Integrative Arts Studies departments invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Studio Art, specializing in 3D Multidisciplinary Art, to fill a new joint appointment between the two programs. We seek a dynamic artist and educator whose creative practice bridges traditional sculpture and emerging technologies, and who is committed to teaching, mentorship, and collaborative work within a liberal arts environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate not only excellence in their field in a liberal arts environment but also a deep commitment to cross-disciplinary dialogue, inclusive pedagogy, and the kind of global perspective that defines Goucher’s mission. Goucher faculty teach a load of 20 credits per year, or roughly the equivalent of 5 courses.

Position Overview

The successful candidate will teach both foundation and advanced-level courses, such as:

  • Visual Thinking (2D/3D foundations)
  • Creation and Meaning
  • 3D Practices for Creative Thinkers
  • Ceramics: Process & Practice
  • Sculpture I & II
  • Digital Fabrication I & II

Courses may integrate traditional practices (wood, clay, metal, textiles, plaster) with digital approaches, including 3D printing, CNC routing, laser cutting, electronics, and digital modeling. The faculty member will oversee the sculpture studio, play a central role in developing Goucher’s new Makerspace facilities, and ensure the safe use of fabrication tools and technologies.

In this role, the successful candidate will help define the future of 3D art at Goucher by integrating experimentation, sustainability, and community-centered approaches.

Desired Qualifications

  • MFA or terminal degree in Studio Art or a related field (required)
  • College-level teaching experience with evidence of excellence
  • Demonstrated expertise in both traditional fabrication methods and digital 3D technologies
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot fabrication equipment; proficiency in relevant software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Blender, Cura, Fabman; Python/C++ for fabrication desirable)
  • Record of creative research and professional practice
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogy, mentorship, and engaging students from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Interest in sustainability, intercultural perspectives, or community engagement is highly desirable

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with 3D Makerspace tools and environment
  • Experience managing a traditional sculpture studio, including ceramics, welding, and a range of power tools, with a demonstrated focus on safe operation, supervision, and supporting student learning in a hands-on fabrication studio

Application Instructions

Applicants should submit:

  • Cover letter addressing teaching philosophy and creative practice. The teaching philosophy should speak to your pedagogical approaches to instruction, classroom practices, and strategies, and your ability to teach to students from a wide range of backgrounds in a liberal arts college setting.
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Portfolio of creative work (20 images or time-based media equivalent)
  • Teaching portfolio (sample syllabi, 10 images of student work, and teaching evaluations if available)

Names and contact information for three professional references will be requested from finalists later in the process.

Applications will be reviewed beginning November 10, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled.

Salary ranges:

Assistant professor: $63,000-65,334

Associate professor: $72,000-75,251
