Position Summary
The Associate Radiation Safety Specialist (ARSS) performs a wide variety of radiation safety related duties for the Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Department’s radiation safety program.
- The ARSS has frequent oral and written communication with professional staff (Ph.D., MD, Senior Researchers, Lab Technicians), clerical staff (secretaries and clerks), physical plant staff (cleaners, shop personnel, etc.), graduate and undergraduate students, most university departments and outside vendors.
- Thus, the ARSS must communicate well with individuals and be able to independently recognize potentially unsafe conditions and act accordingly to correct the situation.
- The ARSS reports directly to the Radiation Safety Manager (RSM).
- The work assignments are primarily based on maintaining compliance with applicable state and federal regulations governing the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment.
- Currently, there are over 250 individuals in more than 150 laboratories using radioactive materials and over 110 x-ray machines on campus.
- The ARSS must be familiar with all aspects of the safety program.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Excellent customer service skills and good interpersonal communications skill required.
- Working knowledge in natural science or engineering.
- A valid Class D driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle is required or candidate must otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation requirements of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an academic and/or research environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in health Physics or graduate degree in science or engineering with courses in radiation protection.
- Graduate training in natural science or engineering.
- Experience in the field of applied radiation protection.
- Practical ability with ionizing radiation sources, equipment, and associated safety instrumentation.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including respirators and a self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Must be able to move a minimum of 30 lbs. (including hazardous materials containers and supplies) with or without reasonable accommodations.
Salary Range
$51,300 - $55,000
