Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
Position Overview
The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as an essential member of the leadership team in the office of Academic Affairs and the Provost. The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs assists, advises, and supports the Provost in the administration and oversight of Academic Affairs. Working under the direction of the Provost, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs provides leadership in coordinating academic initiatives, supporting curriculum quality, strengthening accreditation and compliance efforts, and advancing student-centered and practice-based education aligned with Wilberforce University’s mission and academic priorities. Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs acts on behalf of the Provost in coordinating key academic and engaged learning initiatives, ensuring they are effectively implemented, integrated across units, and aligned with university-wide goals. The position plays a central role in translating the Provost’s academic vision into operational practice and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The incumbent works collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, college deans, and administrative leadership to support curriculum review, academic program effectiveness, and student learning outcomes. This role requires a strong appreciation for shared governance, cross-functional collaboration, and the unique mission of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist and advise the Provost in the administration, coordination, and oversight of Academic Affairs. Support the Provost’s efforts to monitor, assess, and evaluate curricula and academic programs to ensure compliance with federal guidelines and accreditation standards. Collaborate with the University’s Accreditation Liaison Officer, on behalf of the Provost, to support institutional and programmatic accreditation processes. Work collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, and college deans to support the development and use of key performance indicators (KPIs) for Academic Affairs. Coordinate the development and maintenance of an Academic Affairs dashboard, including data management, analysis, and reporting for institutional stakeholders. Support curriculum and academic program review processes through the development and maintenance of assessment tools and review matrices. Oversee, by delegation of the Provost, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and institutional research activities. Coordinate the collection, analysis, and reporting of institutional data for governmental agencies, accrediting bodies, and external organizations. Support the development and implementation of fiscal policies for the Division of Academic Affairs in collaboration with the Provost and University leadership. Provide timely and accurate reports to the Provost and University leadership to inform data-driven planning and decision-making. Collaborate with key institutional units, including Admissions, Enrollment Management, Student Engagement, the Registrar’s Office, Fiscal Affairs, and Institutional Advancement, to ensure accurate, consistent, and up-to-date data for internal and external reporting. Support and promote a culture of continuous improvement in academic practice, curriculum design, and academic program effectiveness. Serve as a liaison, as delegated by the Provost, with academic leadership groups and councils regarding Academic Affairs policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned by the Provost.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs must possess a strong understanding of contemporary issues in American higher education, including shared governance, accreditation, accountability, and student success, with particular appreciation for the mission and context of historically Black colleges and universities. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across academic and administrative units. A solid foundation in data-informed decision-making, institutional research, budgeting, and fiscal analysis is required. The ability to analyze institutional data and make clear, actionable recommendations to the Provost is essential. The position requires sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to operate effectively within a delegated authority structure while supporting the Provost. In addition, the position oversees the management of the EO/EA process, serves as a liaison with the Council of Academic Leaders regarding Academic Affairs policies and procedures, and collaborates with the Provost on a daily basis.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a Terminal degree (Ed.D., Ph.D., Psy.D., or J.D.) from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in academic administration, at the college, division, or institutional level.
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively within shared governance structures.
- Experience with Banner and Canvas systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with accreditation processes and compliance reporting.
- Experience working at or with historically Black colleges and universities.
All candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire.
