Associate Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs

Job Summary

We are currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the following position: Associate Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs. The Associate Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs (AVP-FA) provides strategic leadership for faculty success through the design, implementation, and assessment of policies, programs, and systems that support faculty across the full career cycle. This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative and forward-thinking leader to help shape the faculty experience at EWU and to strengthen the systems, relationships, and practices that support faculty excellence. This position is responsible for developing and implementing policies and programs related to faculty recruitment, development, evaluation, retention, tenure, and promotion. The AVP-FA also provides strategic leadership for the professional growth of department chairs, supporting their development as academic leaders and managers across the full range of their responsibilities.

The AVP-FA will collaborate across the Provost’s Office, with campus partners, and with academic departments and administrative units to ensure that faculty development efforts support faculty success, advance EWU’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Strategic Plan, and promote compliance with university policies and regulations. Reporting to the Provost, this position provides university-wide leadership for faculty affairs, faculty development, and faculty personnel processes. The position supervises the Faculty Commons and related staff and serves as the primary liaison among Academic Affairs, Human Resources, Faculty Organization, UFE, and academic units on faculty-related matters. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful university-wide impact by supporting faculty and chairs, fostering a strong academic culture, and helping advance the institution’s strategic priorities.

The salary for this position is $117,972 (minimum) up to $165,160. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience, and skills.

In addition to salary, the university offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, life and disability insurance and retirement. Required Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in a relevant field.
  • Significant experience in academic administration, leading or administering for typically 5-7 years, including progressively responsible and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with faculty personnel processes, including recruitment, evaluation, retention, tenure, and promotion.
  • Experience supervising staff, leading teams, or managing cross-functional initiatives.
  • Direct experience working within a shared governance environment, including collaboration with faculty senates or representative bodies.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing and resolving complex faculty-related issues through strategic problem-solving and effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities to create and share a vision, develop change strategies, and collaborate with stakeholders to lead systemic change.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Washington state laws and regulations related to higher education.
  • Demonstrated track record in faculty development and successful implementation of faculty-related programs and initiatives.
  • Experience implementing or managing technology systems related to faculty affairs (e.g., RTP workflow systems, workload systems, learning management systems).
  • Track record of developing and assessing faculty development programs that improve teaching effectiveness, scholarship, and service outcomes.
  • Experience supporting distance education and online faculty development, including compliance and quality assurance.
  • Currency in AI or research
  • Demonstrated innovation in teaching or curriculum development

Job Duties

Key Responsibilities: Faculty Development and Support

  • Lead the Faculty Commons to develop and implement programs for new faculty orientation and faculty development, including workshops, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities in teaching, research, creative works, and service.
  • Work with campus entities (e.g. Faculty Organization, Human Resources, Records & Registration, etc.) to provide faculty development, especially as it relates to EWU’s Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Plan, and to ensure EWU’s systems work smoothly and efficiently.
  • Use data and assessment to identify and improve effectiveness of programs.
  • Design and implement faculty and chair development according to the specific needs of faculty at all levels and types (e.g. T/TT, special faculty, adjuncts).
  • Design and implement leadership development programs for department chairs and faculty, including onboarding for new chairs, ongoing development for experienced chairs, and pathways that prepare faculty for future leadership roles within the university.
  • Incorporate research-supported practices into a system of faculty and chair development that meets the needs of EWU students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide support for tenure and promotion processes, ensuring adherence to university policies and procedures.
  • Oversee and ensure effective use of technology systems supporting the retention, tenure, and promotion workflow, and faculty activity reporting.
  • Review and synthesize RTP packages for the Provost using established criteria, providing evaluative summaries to support personnel decisions
  • Develop and implement initiatives to support a diverse and inclusive faculty community.

Faculty Evaluation and Retention

  • Foster a positive faculty climate by developing initiatives that support belonging, engagement, and a sense of community across faculty ranks and types.
  • Manage faculty evaluation processes, including performance reviews and feedback mechanisms.
  • Provide professional development for associate deans and chairs on strategies they can use to improve faculty development as it relates to assessment, curriculum development, pedagogy, student support, scholarship, and service.
  • Develop and use strategies to enhance faculty retention and address faculty concerns.

Faculty Professional Leave and Internal Grants

  • Facilitate the process of awarding Faculty Professional Leave.
  • Facilitate the process of awarding the Faculty Research and Creative Works Grants.
  • Identify and implement ways to improve these processes.

Policy Development and Compliance

  • Know and use EWU’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and EWU policies to solve problems and handle concerns involving faculty.
  • Oversee and report on faculty compliance with policies.
  • Develop, update, and communicate policies related to faculty affairs in alignment with university goals, strategic plan, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, state laws, and accreditation standards, including those related to faculty workload and compensation.
  • Represent the Provost’s Office in HR meetings involving faculty medical accommodations to ensure that chairs and faculty understand policies and to ensure that accommodations are appropriate.

Strategic Planning and Reporting

  • Collaboratively create, communicate and implement a strategic plan for faculty affairs.
  • Contribute to strategic planning efforts related to faculty affairs and institutional goals.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on faculty-related metrics and initiatives for senior leadership.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with academic deans, associate deans, department chairs, functional leaders, and other university leaders to address faculty-related issues and initiatives.
  • Serve as a liaison between faculty and administration, fostering effective communication and collaboration.

Faculty Recruitment and Hiring

  • Oversee faculty recruitment processes, including supporting the development of faculty job descriptions, and identifying and sharing recruitment practices to ensure equitable hiring practices.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources on ensuring positions are posted to maximize recruitment opportunities.
  • Develop strategies for faculty recruitment of all types: tenure/tenure-track, special faculty, and adjuncts.
