Athletic Communication Associate- Sports Information

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is an NCAA Division I member of the Missouri Valley and Missouri Valley Football Conferences. We are currently seeking to fill two openings as Athletics Communications Associate- Sports Information.
Examples of Duties
- Disseminates information to boosters, fans, and the general public via the media.
- Designs, produces, distributes publications (i.e., media guides, game programs, sports brochures, newsletters and daily press releases).
- Disseminates information to other university professionals and media members covering SIU and its opponents.
- Maintains favorable public relations with various groups (internal and external to the program) through daily press releases emailed to the media, personal contacts with the media to encourage coverage and conduct of press conferences when appropriate.
- Maintain complete historical and statistical files to gain maximum recognition and exposure for the athletic program and the university.
- Generate greater public awareness and support and secure long-range public relations.
- Enhance the accuracy and tone of communications and generate additional publicity by cultivating a network of contacts within the University, at other institutions, and in the Media.
- When appropriate, assist in game management as official scorer of athletic contests.
Urgency of working deadlines, taxing demands of head coaches, simultaneous occurrence of sports, considerable work outside of normal business hours (including nights, weekends and holidays), significant travel with sports teams, putting positive spin on sensitive personnel matters (i.e., the termination of coaches), dealing with fans and media during tragedies involving student athletes, and producing post season media guides in short time periods.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, sports communications, sports marketing, sports management, public relations, communications, English, or a related field.
- One (1) year (12 months) of professional experience working in sports publicity.
Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.
