Biology Laboratory Director
The Biology department invites applications for a full-time academic year Biology Lab Director who is responsible for laboratory preparation for Fall BIO 101 Introductory Laboratory and Spring BIO 309 Microbiology Laboratory, supporting laboratory teaching and learning, and faculty-student research, contributes to chemical hygiene and safety compliance, and oversees work-study student lab assistants.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work in conjunction with the Biology faculty to plan and prepare the laboratory sections for Biological Principles I labs and Microbiology labs. Attend the weekly lab meetings to review the needs for the upcoming lab exercises.
- Oversee the set-up, execution, and clean-up of each lab section (BIO 101 and BIO 309) during the academic year. Prepare media. Ensure that all reagents, solutions, glassware, and equipment are stocked, available, and in working order. Maintain bacterial cultures and living specimens for teaching purposes when needed.
- Provide in-lab support for lab instructors and work with students in the lab to support student learning. Assist with proctoring laboratory practical exams for students with accommodations.
- Responsible for maintenance, cleanliness, and organization of general biology and microbiology prep rooms, the cold room, and the stockroom; autoclaving and disposing of waste; and sterilization of necessary materials, equipment, and laboratory spaces.
- Responsible for the yearly laundering and organization of student lab coats.
- Support upper-level lab classes and faculty and student research by ensuring the availability of general-use supplies, reagents, solutions, media, and equipment. Ensure upkeep of the cell culture room and other shared research spaces. Coordinate scheduling for shared resources. Provide support for animal husbandry and plant care.
- Order and process the purchase orders for all general lab supplies and the chemical supplies needed for lab instruction in BIO 101 and BIO 309. Work with the Department’s Chairperson to manage the lab supplies budget and keep records of monthly expenditures.
- Oversee the inventory, proper maintenance, and repair of teaching lab equipment, including autoclave inspections, maintenance, and repair; biosafety cabinet certifications; water filtration systems; microscopes; safety checks of eye washes and inspection of satellite accumulation; calibration of micropipettors, balances, and pH meters; and maintenance of spectrophotometers, incubators, and other shared equipment.
- Works with the Biology chairperson to purchase and maintain other department equipment and supplies, as needed.
- Coordinate the interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluation of all work-study students. As their primary supervisor, approve their biweekly timesheets. Work with the Department’s Chairperson to manage the work-study budget.
- Work with the Department chair to oversee the department budget.
- Manage the Biology chemical hygiene program. Work in conjunction with the science chemical hygiene officer to dispose of all chemical and biological waste generated and facilitate yearly training for all work-study students and faculty. Maintain MSDS files.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
A minimum of a BS degree in biology, medical lab science, or a related field with a minimum of 3 years of demonstrated lab experience, including microbiology preparation and techniques. A MS degree with 3 years of demonstrated lab experience is strongly preferred.
