Biomedical Research Laboratory Technician

Department of Oncology, Radiobiology Research Institute, Churchill Hospital, Oxford, OX3 7LJ

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Core Laboratory Technician to join Oxford Cancer, a city-wide research initiative and partnership between Oxford University, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, Thames Valley Cancer Alliance, and the Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group. This post forms part of the Oxford Cancer Experimental Medicine Unit and the Molecular & Cellular Diagnostics Centre (MCDC), supporting translational research and clinical trials by providing high-quality analysis of clinical samples and model systems.

Working under the direction of the MCDC Senior Operational & Logistics Manager and relevant section leads, you will carry out routine and moderately complex laboratory procedures, including sample reception and pre-processing, biobanking activities, standardised assays, and routine equipment and stock management, to support a portfolio of translational research studies and clinical trials.

The role requires meticulous record-keeping, adherence to SOPs and quality standards (GCLP, ISO:15189, HTA), and a willingness to work across different sections and technologies as service needs evolve. It is primarily a service-focused technical role, providing high-quality, reliable support to multiple research and clinical studies. A substantial part of the work is routine but critical (for example, sample reception, processing and record-keeping). There will be opportunities to learn new techniques and develop your skills over time, but applicants should be motivated by doing core laboratory work well and consistently as part of a team.

This post is based at the Radiobiology Research Institute, Churchill Hospital, OX3 7LJ and is offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis (part-time hours, normally between 0.6 and 1.0 FTE, may be considered). The role is primarily worked during weekday core hours, although some occasional out-of-hours / late sample processing may be required.

About you

You will be educated to A Level (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific subject, or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge through substantial laboratory experience. You will have recent hands-on laboratory experience following written procedures (SOPs, protocols, checklists) and keeping accurate records. You will be competent in basic IT for sample and data tracking and aware of governance when working with patient or research data.

You will demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. You should be comfortable contributing to routine service work and take pride in doing the basics well. Experience from other disciplined, fast-paced environments (for example clinical, hospitality or other technical roles) that demonstrates organisation, teamwork and calmness under pressure will also be valued.
