Summary of Position

Under general supervision, performs repairs, installations, maintenance on doors, manual/automated locks, locking systems and security devices; computerized access control systems; door operators, closers, exit devices, and all associated hardware. The Technician’s priorities are determined by the manager. Once work is assigned, the Technician, working under the direction of the Manager and Lead, determines work methods and procedures with the concurrence of the Manager. Work is checked by the Shop Manager, Lead Technician, Housing Building Managers, and student customers (via satisfaction survey) for quality, cleanliness, and timeliness. The Building Access Technician is required to maintain a professional and respectful service approach to students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the University. The Building Access Technician performs assigned duties in such a way to contribute to internal/external customer satisfaction and confidence in the services provided.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Summary: The Building Access and Security technician installs, maintains, repairs, and adjusts all types of doors, hardware, locks and their components for Housing buildings, rooms, and furniture; cuts and issues keys; implements, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains computerized access control systems; upgrades and maintains security systems; maintains and repairs automatic door openers, door closing units and control gates; services and maintains door tele-entry systems; inspects completed work for conformance with R&DE MCP specification requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspects related work performed by contractors; estimates time and materials for locksmith and building access projects; participates in the maintenance and operations of a locksmith, Building Access & Security shop

Primary Responsibilities:

  • 50% Electronic Access work
  • 20% Locksmith work
  • 25% Security door work
  • 5% Preventive Maintenance inspections
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain doors, frames, commercial lock/security hardware including locks, keying systems, door hardware, automatic electric door operators, electronic access system, related building access, and security systems and hardware
  • Complete all work following applicable codes and industry workmanship standards
  • Produce and/or modify doors for locks
  • Cut new keys; replace broken or lost keys
  • Produce and/or modifying key cores to coincide with keying data
  • Perform inspections and preventative maintenance on doors, door hardware, card access devices, and Tele-entry Door King System
  • Cleans, maintains, adjusts, calibrates and services equipment used in the performance of duties
  • Install, service, replace, and remodel doors, frames, and storefronts
  • Monitors work done by outside contractors for adherence to MCP specifications and reports back to the supervisor

Shared Responsibilities

  • Maintains appropriate service and repair records
  • Researches, equipment parts, and supplies assist in maintaining stock
  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service
  • May train and direct the work of other classified staff in the area
  • Assists and serves as back up to other Building Access & Security employees

Required Abilities

  • Ability to perform high-level commercial locksmith work in a code-compliant, workman-like manner
  • Ability to correctly troubleshoot, repair, replace, install doors, frames, related hardware
  • Ability to utilize features of applicable access control systems
  • Read and work from plans, drawings, and blueprints as appropriate to trade
  • Maintain computerized inventory and master locking systems records
  • Assist in training other similarly-classified staff
  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with the manager, coworkers, customers
  • Able to build and maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population
  • Meet the physical demands of the job including standing, kneeling, bending, stooping for extended periods, ability to lift 75 pounds, work from ladders, exposure to weather

Knowledge Of

  • Thorough knowledge of the practices and procedures of the methods
  • Materials and tools used in the locksmith trade
  • Understanding of complex access and control systems
  • Thorough knowledge of all types of locks, fastening devices, and related hardware
  • Working knowledge of electrical locking and security systems and devices applicable code requirements, including those regulations on fire exits and door hardware
  • Ability to work from plans and specifications
  • Utilize appropriate methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment
  • Observe safety precautions in performing all work

Minimum Qualifications

  • Journey level knowledge and work experience in the Building Access & Security trade
  • Minimum two-year journey-level work experience wiring, installing, troubleshooting and repairing various electrified and mechanical door hardware such as exit devices, ADA automatic door closures, etc.
  • Possesses comprehensive door hardware (electrified and mechanical) technical knowledge such as door control, closures, locks, exit devices, and door hardware applications
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge and skill in Locksmithing and door hardware installation, operation and repair.
  • Knowledge and ability to specify and work with various materials used in the trade
  • Ability to work independently and with little supervision
  • Ability to follows oral and written directions
  • Ability to read drawings, blueprints
  • Operates power tools utilizing safe work practices
  • Must be capable of learning and applying safe work practices, including but not limited to hazardous waste management handling, Injury and Illness Prevention Program, confined space procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and chemical safety practices.
  • Ability to perform various maintenance and moving tasks including, but not limited to working from step ladders, must be able to lift heavy materials frequently each day, work overhead, kneel, stoop, stand, crawl, or sit for long periods, work in all types of weather
  • Ability to respond to rapidly changing priorities
  • Knowledge of all building codes in his/her trade including requirements for door operation, egress requirements, door/assembly fire ratings
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instruction
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license
  • Respond to emergency calls nights, weekends, holidays
  • Willing to work variable shifts at night or on weekends
  • Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely and adhere to all Environmental Health and Safety regulations implemented by the University.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified in Lenel hardware or 4 years of pertinent experience in service, installation, and maintenance of electronic card access
  • Experience with DoorKing Telephone Entry Systems
  • Experience with wireless locks offline and online i.e., Aperio
  • Sargent IN100 and Schlage AD Series
  • Remain current with security technology by utilizing online courses or self-training guides
  • Prior working experience using Windows computers, iPads, and related industry software such as Lenel OnGuard
  • Experience working with key tracking systems and solutions such as KeyTrak & Traka systems
  • Experience with Stanley BEST Access keying systems that include Keystone software
  • Experience working in a University Environment, particularly in residential and dining facilities

Anticipated Shift: Monday-Friday 9:00AM-5:30PM

Expected Pay: $50.99 (Step 1) per hour.

Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
