Job Summary:
We are in search of Assistant Supervisors to join our Building Services Supervisor team in University Housing Facilities!
This is a supervisory role that leads and oversees the work of Facilities Technicians and Custodial staff ensuring facilities are properly maintained for residence hall, dining, and other housing locations. This role provides coverage for the supervisor as needed, responding to emergencies, modifying and executing adjusted work plans for the day, inspecting the cleanliness of resident, public, and staff-facing spaces, conducting performance reviews and follow up with full-time employees and addressing any concerns residents/customers have each day. This position ensures our ability to meet life/safety requirements, maintain appropriate customer service levels and has partial cleaning responsibilities that helps cover all the daily responsibilities of the unit workload.
Qualified candidates possess previous custodial or maintenance experience. Previous leadership or supervisory experience is a plus!
Work Schedule:
- The primary schedule for these positions are below.
- 1st Shift: 7:30am – 4pm Monday – Friday (some weekends)
- 3rd Shift: 8:30pm – 7:00am, working four 10 hour shifts with rotating weekends and holidays.
- Work schedule will be set with selected finalist(s) at time of offer. Schedule alterations as operations and position expectations demand.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Assists with planning and implementation of facility emergency and hazardous response policies and procedures
- Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances, reports issues to appropriate entities
- Assists in the development, scheduling, inspection, and supervision of operational work plans and/or staff for an assigned unit
- Maintains clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
- Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
- Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs
- Maintains organization of supply areas and equipment, documents inventory, and requests additional supplies as needed

Housing Facilities is part of the Division of University Housing at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Our team is responsible for the full spectrum of two distinct facilities operations, which include housekeeping, mechanical maintenance, infrastructure repairs and renewal, and long‑term capital planning, for both undergraduate students and graduate students and their families living with us. As a student service organization, Housing Facilities advances the university’s mission by delivering safe, well-maintained living and learning environments.
The Residence Halls, consisting of 30 buildings and 2 million square feet, houses approximately 8,000 undergraduate students during the academic year and welcomes more than 18,000 conference and program guests each summer. In addition to living spaces, our operations support a wide range of programs and functions, including classrooms, office spaces, dining and culinary operations, marketplace venues, meeting rooms, and event spaces.
University Apartments provides housing to an average of 2,500 residents in 1,240 apartments, serving a diverse community of graduate students, staff, and their families. The University Apartments community is located on over 80 acres of greenspace and also includes a large community center with a Housing-operated licensed early childhood education program.
While most of our front-line staff and supervisors are hired with a primary unit location to serve residents and guests, specific to their role, our facilities team is committed to remaining flexible enough to support each other and our operations as needed throughout the year.
Compensation:
The starting hourly wage is $23.00 or higher based on qualifications with a competitive retirement and benefits package, including vacation, holidays, and paid time off. Benefits information can be found at (https://hr.wisc.edu/benefits/)
University Staff also earn additional money when working at night (6:00pm to 6:00am) and on weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Additional $2.50/hour for nighttime work on weekdays, up to $2.50/hour for daytime weekend work, and up to $3.30/hour for nighttime weekend work.
Required Qualifications:
- Six months of previous experience in a custodial or maintenance field
- Drivers License – Valid and Meets UW Rist Management Standards (Preferred for 1st Shift, Required for 3rd Shift)
Preferred Qualifications:
- One year of previous continuous employment
- Six months of previous leadership or supervisory experience
Education:
High School Diploma Preferred Minimum
