Job Description

Montgomery College, Office of Student Affairs/Financial Aid Office, has need for a full-time, Campus Student Financial Aid Director. If you enjoy managing a dedicated team of financial aid professionals, providing excellent guidance and counseling to our students and community, this is the job for you! The work schedule is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., including some evenings and weekends. This is a grade 33, non-bargaining, exempt position. The position is located in Rockville, MD. Situational telework may be granted based on the needs of the unit.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and must be willing to contribute to the Colleges strategic plan of inclusion.

Under supervision and/or direction, manage the daily operations of a campus financial aid office which includes supervising, training, and scheduling staff. Each campus director in addition to campus management, also supervises a college-wide function. As part of a units management team, the campus directors work with the college-wide director to establish policies and procedures ensuring equitable treatment of all students across all college locations. The work consists of administrative, professional, technical, and supervisory activities that involve the oversight of financial aid programs, systems and services to ensure that these perform as intended. Decisions require the incumbent to apply technical criteria, rules, and policies and procedures to situations.

Contacts are with college administrators, faculty, staff, students and their families/representatives, and representatives of external entities such as financial aid professionals from other colleges and universities, and representatives of the Department of Education and state agencies. Verbal and written communications involve seeking, explaining, presenting, defending, justifying, negotiating, and settling significant issues.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a resource to the campus and college leadership, deans, faculty, staff and the community on all matters related to federal, state, and institutional policies and procedures regarding financial aid and the Banner financial aid systems.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing to internal departments, external agencies, individuals and colleagues regarding all aspects of financial aid.
  • Administer and interpret federal, state, and institutional regulations, laws and policies on financial aid to staff, administrators, faculty, students, and the community.
  • Determine standards and write procedures for financial aid delivery system and make changes as needed as part of the college management team.
  • Consult and plan in conjunction with other campus leaders regarding campus functions.
  • Resolve difficult issues referred by campus or college administrators, faculty, staff, and outside agencies as well as those referred by financial aid counseling staff.
  • Counsel prospective and current students and parents regarding federal, state, and institutional financial aid.
  • Review and respond to academic, unique and special circumstances appeals, as part of college-wide professional judgment committee.
  • Direct all aspects of the financial aid student awarding process to monitor and to ensure quality in staff performance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in student financial aid including two (2) years at the equivalent of a financial aid supervisor or higher, with demonstrated experience providing an understanding of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Thorough knowledge of the provisions of state and federal legislation and administrative regulations and policies governing federal financial aid or other funded programs, principles and procedures relating to financial aid office operations, principles of management, supervision and training; of techniques of counseling and interviewing, accounting and fiscal management practices and of computerized financial aid award and tracking systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with student financial aid data management systems and Microsoft Office Suite Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience and skill in interpreting and implementing federal and state laws, regulations, policies and procedures, implementing and monitoring compliance with operational policies and procedures, leading, managing and motivating personnel, oral and written communications, and skills in service diverse communities, students, and colleagues.
  • Ability to administer a wide variety of state, institutional, federal and private aid programs, lead and manage a diverse staff and student body, and to be attentive to details; to analyze situations and interpret policy, use sound judgment, handle multiple tasks, and perform under pressure.
  • Ability to travel locally for work related activities such as meetings and outreach activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management

Hiring Range: $86,709-$119,224 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $151,740 annually.
