Looking for a unique opportunity to live and work in one of Australia’s most stunning natural environments? Join James Cook University’s Orpheus Island Research Station and play a hands-on role supporting world-class research in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.

As a Casual Station Assistant, you’ll contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the station—supporting logistics, assisting with basic maintenance, and delivering high-quality housekeeping services that ensure a safe and welcoming environment for researchers, students and staff. 

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical, hands-on work, thrives in a remote team environment, and is keen to develop skills across operations, logistics and research support.

What you’ll be doing:

• Supporting daily station operations, including logistics, stock control and basic maintenance
• Delivering high-quality cleaning and housekeeping across accommodation, labs and shared spaces
• Shadowing and assisting Research Station staff in day-to-day tasks to develop familiarity with station operations.
• Contributing to a safe, respectful and environmentally responsible workplace

• Physical capability to work in a tropical, outdoor environment
• Strong communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude
• Interest in developing skills in research support, operations or logistics

This is a casual opportunity offered via Expression of Interest. The role operates on a rotational roster and requires living onsite at the research station.
