Chair, Department of Neurosciences

Cleveland Clinic invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Neurosciences, within Cleveland Clinic Research. This position offers the chance to shape a globally recognized research program that drives innovation in brain health and neurological disease.

The Department of Neurosciences currently comprises 20 independent laboratories and more than 190 research members focused on understanding brain development, function and disease. With expertise spanning neuronal activity and advanced imaging, cerebrospinal fluid biology, immunity and microglia, the department is at the forefront of discoveries in neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, cognitive and neurodegenerative disorders. The research portfolio addresses critical questions such as how cerebrospinal fluid and dura-associated lymphatic brain tissue contribute to central nervous system disease; how imaging and neuromodulation technologies can improve the diagnosis and treatment of brain disorders; and how microglia and innate immunity affect conditions including multiple sclerosis, autism, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Investigators also lead work to mitigate the impact of chronic inflammation and immune responses on the central nervous system, while developing biomarkers and novel delivery methods to support clinical trials and advance neurotherapeutic care. This work is supported by unique Cleveland Clinic resources, including our pioneering Rapid Autopsy Program with the Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis. In 2024, the department held $13.3 million in active external funding. The department also maintains a strong commitment to education and mentorship, currently training more than 120 postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students.

This is a central and critical role for Cleveland Clinic globally and in the Cleveland Innovation District. Applicants must hold an MD and/or PhD degree with a distinguished national/international record of scholarship and significant administrative experience, including mentorship of students, trainees, fellows, and faculty of diverse research backgrounds. The successful candidate will present a compelling strategic vision for the future role of the department within the research and broader medical environments. The Chair will guide a multidisciplinary team of faculty, trainees and administrative staff and will oversee operations across Cleveland Clinic’s global locations. A key part of the role is close integration with Cleveland Clinic’s clinical institutes, particularly the Neurological Institute, to accelerate the translation of discovery into practice.

The Chair of Neurosciences will report to the Chief of Cleveland Clinic Research and will hold a Full Staff position (equivalent to Full Professor), with a joint appointment in the Neurological Institute and a faculty appointment at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, at a rank commensurate with experience.

Kindly submit your application by October 15, 2025.
