Job Description

The Clinical Instructor is responsible for teaching, supervising, and evaluating undergraduate nursing students in direct patient care settings. Working under the direction of the assigned primary course faculty, the Clinical Instructor implements approved clinical learning plans and supports achievement of course and program outcomes.

Clinical Instructors model professional nursing behavior, including ethical practice, accountability, civility, and effective communication. They guide students in applying theoretical knowledge to clinical judgment and patient care while ensuring safe, high-quality learning experiences.

Clinical Instructors also serve as liaisons between the School of Nursing and assigned clinical sites, supporting positive professional relationships and respectful learning environments.

Workload is determined by clinical site schedules and may include 13-hour shifts, evenings, weekends, or variable hours based on placement needs.

Scope of Authority and Responsibility

Clinical Instructors are authorized to:
Supervise and evaluate student clinical performance
Remove students from clinical activities when patient, public, or student safety is at risk
Address minor clinical or professionalism concerns through real-time coaching

Clinical Instructors are expected to:
Demonstrate professional conduct, ethical decision-making, and accountability
Notify course faculty and program leadership of safety concerns or significant performance issues
Follow School of Nursing policies related to documentation, escalation, and due process

This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Teaching and Supervision

  • Be physically present on-site for the full duration of assigned clinical shifts
  • Supervise and direct patient care for assigned student groups
  • Orient students to clinical sites and model professional behavior and safety practices
  • Teach clinical skills, judgment, communication, and professional responsibilities
  • Lead clinical discussions that connect theory to practice
  • Coordinate with clinical staff regarding patient assignments

Student Development and Evaluation

  • Support development of professional values, accountability, and clinical competence
  • Address student concerns in a timely and professional manner
  • Reinforce professional expectations and intervene when standards are not met
  • Evaluate and document student performance in accordance with course policies

Communication and Collaboration

  • Maintain professional communication with students, faculty, and clinical partners
  • Communicate regularly with course faculty regarding student progress and concerns
  • Collaborate with program leadership to resolve instructional or clinical issues

Faculty Engagement and Program Support

  • Participate in faculty meetings and required program activities
  • Provide classroom or simulation instruction as assigned
  • Maintain current clinical practice knowledge
  • Serve as a professional role model within the faculty team
  • Contribute to program evaluation and quality improvement efforts

Orientation, Training, and Compliance

Clinical Instructors must complete all required onboarding and training established by the University, School of Nursing, and clinical agencies. Compliance with University policies, clinical site requirements, and professional conduct standards is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, unencumbered RN license in Idaho
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience
  • Strong communication and critical-thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience precepting or mentoring nursing students
  • Experience with or knowledge of competency-based education

Additional Information

Salary will be $49,152 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
