Description:

The College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks a Clinical Instructor – Licensed Clinical Social Worker to provide clinical mental health services to children and families at the Vine School Health Center, while contributing to the educational mission of the College of Nursing and College of Social Work. This is a full time, 12-month faculty position. Application review will begin two weeks after position is posted with a start date when a candidate is selected.

About the Position

This position includes (1) teaching and clinical supervision of undergraduate and graduate social work students as well as graduate nursing students, and (2) active collaboration with healthcare and school personnel to promote student well-being. The role also supports scholarly activities, program development, and institutional service aligned with the strategic priorities of the Colleges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching Responsibilities
  • Serve as a field instructor for undergraduate and graduate students placed at the Vine School Health Center.
  • Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and evaluation of students in accordance with university and licensing standards.
  • Facilitate clinical learning through structured case discussions, reflective supervision, and modeling of professional practice.
  • Contribute to the educational mission of the College by fostering a learning environment that promotes ethical, inclusive, and culturally competent care.
  • Scholarly/Creative Activity:
  • Engage in clinically relevant scholarship that supports the integration of behavioral health into school settings.
  • Collaborate on grant writing and other external funding efforts to support clinical and research initiatives.
  • Public Service / Clinical:
  • Deliver evidence-based, developmentally appropriate mental health therapy to children and adolescents.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial and diagnostic evaluations to assess mental health needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, providing individual, group, and family therapy.
  • Respond to crises, conduct suicide risk assessments, and coordinate safety planning and referrals as needed.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Collaborate with nurse practitioners, school personnel, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure holistic, coordinated care.
  • Address social determinants of health and assist families in accessing community resources and supports.
  • Participate in interagency collaboration with Knox County Schools and other local organizations to support student wellness and family engagement.
  • Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the development and refinement of clinical workflows, care coordination protocols, and educational materials.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, clinical case conferences, and school-based initiatives.
  • Support institutional service commitments through committee participation and contributions to the mission of the College of Nursing.
  • Provide input into programming and policies that impact student mental health services at the clinic and district levels.
  • Represent the Vine School Health Center in community partnerships and outreach activities.
  • Participate in program evaluation and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Responsible for managing credentialing and billing processes, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.
  • Coordinates case management tasks, including insurance referrals, prior authorizations, and resource navigation for patients.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned MSSW at time of appointment
  • Licensed as a social worker in Tennessee (LMSW)
  • 2-5 years of practice experience with children
  • Evidence of successful clinical teaching experience
  • Effective interpersonal skills and cultural competence
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students and colleagues
  • Ability to obtain CPR certification

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Tennessee
  • Immediate eligibility for LCSW license in Tennessee
  • Experience with technology and electronic health record
  • Registered play therapist or interest in or seeking certification
