Contractual Laboratory Research Assistant

The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Neurobiology is currently recruiting for a Contractual Laboratory Research Assistant. The position will perform biomedical research in the laboratory of Dr. Michy Kelly in the Department of Neurobiology. The Research Assistant will conduct experiments involving protein purification, cell culture, and behavior. Occasional weekend or holiday work will be required. Primary Duties:

  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: performing cell culture experiments that examine the effect of recombinant DNA and/or pharmacological tools; executing molecular/biochemical analyses using techniques such as Western blotting, enzyme assays, microscopy, etc.; tissue processing (e.g., cryosectioning, homogenizing, etc.), performing protein purification, conducting mouse colony maintenance and behavioral studies.
  • Compile and analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications and contribute to laboratory publications.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; ordering supplies, maintaining lab stockpiles (e.g., buffers), keeping the laboratory environment orderly and clean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, biomedical sciences, or a related field or discipline.

Preferred Experience: One (1) year of laboratory research experience. Cell culture, protein purification, mouse colony maintenance experience, and publication experience.

Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently. Hiring Range: $48,000 - $54,000, Commensurate with education and experience
