Job Summary
The Bruin Scholars Program (BSP) at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) supports new and continuing students as they navigate and thrive in higher education. Under minimal supervision the BSP Coordinator will lead key elements of a comprehensive student success program, including:
- Overseeing the Bruin Scholars Program at the South City campus, including tracking retention, GPA, graduation rates and satisfaction rates.
- Develop and implement programming in partnership with other staff and faculty for consistent monthly meaningful and educational contact with Bruin Scholars students.
- Providing case management support for a cohort of approximately 200 Bruin Scholars students.
- Hiring, training, and supervising part-time peer mentors
- Representing and implementing Office of Student Success initiatives (e.g., welcome weeks, Summer Bridge, and related programming).
- Assisting current and prospective students with navigating college processes, including applying and registering for classes.
- Managing the South City campus programming budget for the Bruin Scholars program.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
The BSP Coordinator must:
- Have a sophisticated understanding of student development or student retention theories and how they impact student success.
- Posses a sophisticated understanding of intrusive advising techniques and early alert interventions.
- Motivate, encourage, mentor, and teach new students how to navigate higher education.
- Create a welcoming environment for new students and their families.
- Demonstrate initiative, creativity, teamwork, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.
- Articulate the purpose of general education classes and teach students how to register for these courses.
- Feel comfortable using technology.
- Be dependable, have excellent organizational skills, and pay close attention to details.
- Participate in ongoing professional development sessions.
Candidate should possess the ability to:
- Supervise part-time staff
- Manage a budget, make expenses, and work closely with their supervisor to determine program needs.
- Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of diverse individuals.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Lead collaborations across campus(s) focus on student success.
- Assess the needs. of new students and create interventions or services to meet these needs.
- Organize, process, and disseminate large amounts of information accurately.
- Learn the requirements of SLCC services, program and degree options, as well as college resources and processes.
- Work well independently with integrity under minimal supervision.
- utilize basic computer systems and SLCC student information systems (i.e., Banner, Starfish, Navigate 360).
- Prioritize assignments, plan and carry projects to completion.
- Learn quickly and work ethically with confidential information.
- Advocate for your team and student's needs.
- Work a flexible schedule which may include some early morning and some late evenings.
- Communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities
Minimum qualifications
To be considered for this position, all candidates must:
- Have a bachelor's degree, preferably in education, educational psychology, sociology, communications, English, ethnic studies, or related field.
- Four (4) years of full-time direct professional experience.
Experience may be traded for education on a 1:1 ratio (1 additional year of education equals 1 year of relevant experience). Part time experience can be combined to meet full-time experience. (2 years part time equals 1 year full time).
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will go to candidates who have:
- A master's degree in a related field.
- Experience working in higher education environment, particularly two-years schools.
- Bilingual or multilingual ability.
